At the risk of being controversial why the obsession with wheel weights :closedeyes: How many of us are good enough driving gods to be able to feel the difference in unsprung weight on a track let alone on the road :tumble:

I can tell you that i do feel the difference between my stock NA wheels and my OZ superleggera on bumpy roads.
It not only affects the handling but the ride is also smoother .
On a flat road, i can't feel it.

In most cases new tyres will be installed on new rims, which makes it hard to tell where the difference in car handling comes from. When replacing the originals, rims size will be likely to change too. What I noticed with reducing weight on wheels (rotor upgrade, -3,5kg each corner), that it reduces the effort needed to turn the steering wheel or change car direction at high speed. Think of corrections you make on long fast turns, etc. This was noticable on public road, without paying much attention on it! I didn't feel any change on the rear thou but it must have a positive effect on overall grip: the lighter the wheels the better they are to control by the suspension.

Wheel Weights.net hasn't been updated for 1.5 years, but it is still a very complete overview. :)

Your car looks very cool. Personally I am not interested in making my car look like its previous owner has moved onto a 1.2 Nova with 19 inch wheels and the boot filled with stereo equipment. What wheels have you fitted? I am referring to Dominique's machine....

How much does the air in the tyres weigh ? :lol:


Is there a benefit in filling the tyres with Helium instead of Nitrogen?

That has to be for a single wheel and tyre.... Tyres are suprisingly heavy!

Ultra's are the replacement of the discontinued supers, I have Ultras on my track car. Has to be said the finish on the OZ wheels makes TD look home made - in a bad way.

What wheels have you fitted?

I am referring to Dominique's machine....

Sorry I missed your post from almost a year ago... :blush:

The rims are ATS DTC's, the lighter race version. (search should bring you some info on this forum)
At the moment I've R888 tyres installed but I will be trying the Kumho semi's this year.: 205/40R17 front (no probs with rubbing, see pic) and 235/40R17 rears.
The rear tyres only touch slightly when riding height is reduced to two inches. :lol:

Good point, tyres weigh approx the same as a rim, but regarding dynamics they have more influence on handling because the weight is further from the centre of the wheel.
In this German Semi Comparison Test, you will find some weights on page 5.
Mind that the size they've tested is 255/40R18.

Thread resurrection as I was looking for NA OEM front wheel weight...
I couldn't find here....

But the NA rear wheel weight is 11.8 kg

I weighed my NA wheels + tyres when I removed them; they measured 16.8/22.1kg front/rear on my scales with a very low front tyre and decent tread on the rear.

 

I replaced them with a set of forged Exige wheels that weighed 14.5/16.3kg front/rear including good tyres, and with 4-stud hubs and 2-piece brakes saved just under 28kg of unsprung rotational mass in total (which went a long way toward offsetting the extra weight of a supercharger conversion).

 

The new rear wheels were lighter than the OEM fronts, despite being 2.5" wider!

The savings are unsprung so in terms of performance it's more like taking 50-70kg out of the car if you listen to F1 teams.

The car felt much more delicate to drive after going forged.
