Has anyone managed to remove the oil filter on a turbo without taking the undertray off and not get oil everywhere????

Yes, sit a catch tray on the undertray. Only a short spurt will come out if you have drained the sump.

put a plastic bag over the filter once you have loosened it to catch the oil
