I went through this in April of last year after being at the same place for 20 years. It may seem rough when you are going through it, but I consciously took 3 months off. What I do now is SO much better than what I did before. When the right thing comes along, you'll wonder why you hadn't made the move yourself before. Good luck, but don't worry.

Cheers for the kind words guys, I'm actively looking at a number of options including 2 career changes as I dont have the excuse not to re-train with the small amount of time i have spare. I do think this is a positive thing now, I've not been happy for a number of years and this is giving me the push to pursue something better. I have been given the option to buy the company but I feel this isnt the best way forward

Good luck!! Hopefully you'll back as it being the kick you needed. Been there three times now, each time it's been easier and less stressful than the previous time. Also this is a great time of year, my last redundancy was April 2013 and I enjoyed the summer, trackdays, picnics with the kids and then got a job in the Sept. Previous times were October and that's a depressing time of year without adding redundancy.
