So our luck had to turn at some point, it seems that this season’s intent on going to go to the wire!
Warm up
We needed MAX points today to keep the season alive so I decided to make a statement of intent right from the off and try to get inside my competitors heads. Hammered it right from the off and stamped my name with my highest overall finish to date. Put in a 1:19.490 which put us 2’nd overall (only 4 tenths behind Bo Nielson) and 1’st in class by over 4 seconds. Think that ruffled some feathers!!
Practice
To give Umar credit he responded admirably to my challenge by heading out and slashing nearly 3 seconds out of his previous time clocking a 1:21.511 which coincided with me struggling to get grip and slipping back to a 1:19.912 To be fair at this point Umar was in my head, but I was sure he’d dug deep for that and finding an EXTRA 2 seconds would be unlikely! The points as they are I needed Umar to slip back into 3’rd position so the points margin would grow but there seemed no worry of that as Mike Ward was not scoring points today and Ronnie Amis was struggling with understeer and could only managed a 1:24.933
Qualification
Now this is where I see if Umar has been playing possum. I hammered it again out of the blocks and put in some hard laps! Car had now developed a nasty understeer so I was fighting to keep it on the track and ventured onto the grass at one point when I ran out of road on the exit. Ooops
Cooled off for a couple of laps and decided to go for a late hot one. Absolutely nailed the back section but locked up coming down the corkscrew. Put in a 1:19.287 quickest of the day on the late lap so knew I had more time to come out of that! Umar had a nightmare and came last in class with a 1:23.618, Mike Ward got second with a 1:21.932 and Ronnie took a point from Umar with a 1:22.618 – Happy days!
The Final
Pressure was kind of off us at this point. We’d been doing 1:19’s all day so knew I could pull another one out and knew it would be enough but I decided I wanted to break into 1:18’s so I still went out hard. Made a ‘1-click’ adjustment on the Nitrons which cured the understeer and off I went. Had a few ‘moments’ and although I was trying much harder I was starting to get sloppy; must be getting tired
Pushed hard but could not crack into the 1:18’s but put in my fastest of the day on my final lap with a 1:19.204. Umar was back to his best and put in his quickest of the day too taking second with 1:21.3 which although innocuous could be the most important result of the season (and not in a good way for me).
Championship aspirations aside I was over the moon with the day! This was the first event in a long time where we have been trouble free (last was Oulton) and we won It comfortably (as we did at Oulton). Proves we have the pace and a 1:19 around Anglesey on these crappy tyres is pretty special imo. Team were great again and what with camping over of the whole weekend I think this one was the most fun we’ve had yet!! Cheers again guys!!
Now looking ahead to Snetterton and the 200 circuit. It’s a power circuit so is perfectly suited to Umar’s 700bhp flying machine. I’m going into the round with a 12 point lead in the championship standings which means I can finish as low as second and still take the season. That will be tough given the cars involved but Is not out of the question. I need to make my car faster!!
