Round 2 Knockhill
Trailered the car up to Scotland Friday. Dealt with a closure on the M5 which caused a massive delay, then ANOTHER closure on the M6. 10hr drive to the circuit. Perfect!
Halfway there I realise I’ve left all the vehicle passes and tickets in the house too which was not good!! Luckilly Cliffie to the rescue and I was back in business!
Exhausted and hungry we pull into a carpark in Dunfermline only to realise my hardtop is no longer attached to the car. And it’s now raining, great!! Friday 13th strikes!
Saturday – Trackday
I’ve learnt this track online so head out on some familiarisation type laps. Love it! Great twisty track. Chicaine takes some getting used to as it’s blind and has MASSIVE kerbs but I was happy enough. Hooked the Vbox up and was doing 1:01’s almost straight away. Now I was pushing all morning but couldn’t seem to improve on 1:01’s. I complained all morning that I was hitting a wall time wise, and although not a car was getting by me 1:01’s were all I was clocking….. A decent time, but I wanted to get below a minute!
Fitted a new splitter during lunch (pics a few posts back) and this gave me a little more confidence straight away. Time dropped to a 1:00. But could not dip below into the 59’s. I didn’t want to take too much out of the car so decided to study the Vbox and look to see where I can make up some tenths. Saw a couple of improvements so was quite confident.
Sunday – Race Day
It hadn’t rained like I feared it would but was very cold and blustery. Headed out in warm up on a dry track. Went well, felt quick straight away a 1:01.8 leading class by a second and with a blistering third sector that was 5th overall! Was happy with that.
Tinkered with the car here and there to deal with the conditions and headed out for practice on a damp track. Was only slippery in places so didn’t think this effected me. Drove the corners harder than ever but time then went up to 1:02.6, my slowest yet…? Tried to push on to improve but the rain was starting to make the track pretty damn slippy and I knew I wasn’t going to improve. Two cars spuin off and everybody came in except Gerry Atkinson who stayed out alone pounding the track in the wet
The worst seemed to happen then as the weather deteriorated through lunch and was splippy in places when I headed out for qualifying. However, I put down what felt like a blistering lap, but again only hit a 1:02.2, miles off pace really couldn’t see how I could be 2 seconds slower than the day before…?
Now I overlaid my faster lap from the previous day against my qualifying lap and could see exactly where I was losing time (the first right after Duff’s). It would take a fair bit of commitment to improve on what I had done, but if I carried more speed out of there I’d be quicker up the hill into the chicane as this was where the laps differed. The track had dried out too and I was fastest in class in warm up when it was dry so I was very confident and was psyched up to really commit!
The Final - Sat in the holding area whilst the marshals prepared the track and killed the engine for a while when I was told there would be a 10 min delay. When we were waved into the pitlane so I fired the engine back up and immediately noticed a strange note to the engine. Killed it and fired it back up and it was the same. Thought it sounded like a hose blown off, or even an exhaust blowing so knew my chances of winning could be over. Due to not many people making the trip up and Ronnie’s mechanical failure there were only two in class so I knew if I could complete a lap (no matter how slow) I’d still receive championship points and could then dive in the pits for a repair. I could then head out on track and maybe still win the race!!
Out lap does not count so would have to stay out for at least three laps. On the second lap though the EML light kicked in and the car went into limp mode. Knew then my chance of winning were now gone! Marshall pulled me off the track, but allowed me to complete my lap and still achieve points as long as I stayed off the line. Did a 6:21 lap on the grass
Must have pissed a few of the cars off too driving this slowly, but made every effort to sit on the grass then drive when gaps appeared but the chief marshall still bollocked me after the race (rightly so). Crawled up the pit straight and duped the car metres after the finish line and sat out the rest of the car behind the tyre wall. GUTTED!!!
Winning time in class was 1:01.1 which I had beaten comfortably the day before so I was even more gutted that the win WAS there for us.
ScanGuage gives a misfire code but we changed the plugs and coil pack to no avail. Going to buy a compression tester today to check for the worst, but hopefully it’ll be running again soon!!
6 weeks till Brands Hatch double header.
