What is a heat sink bung?

I stumbled across one the other day and wondered what on earth it was. It's like a deeper than normal bung (think more like a cheater type thing that would move the tip further out of the exhaust flow) but the body of the bung has a series of "cooling" fins (maybe four or five) machined into it. Can't believe it works.

Also saw a copper sheet heatsink that claimed to do the same thing and was bolted between the wideband and the exhaust boss. That would probably have made more difference due to surface area but I've never seen them fitted before on cars where I've had OEM wideband's fitted (i.e. the exact same Bosch sensors they now flog as part of these kits).

Innovate HBX-1:

http://www.innovatem...productid=16148

This is used when turbo'd or SC'ed cars are equipped with a wideband and the exhaust system (like on the VX) is too short to put the sensor far enough away from the exhaust ports to remain cool enough.

Wideband sensors can not tolerate as much heat on the sensor and body as narrowband ones, so this helps.

But LOOK OUT! This is NOT (repeat.. NOT!) the same as the 'MIL eliminiator' extender bungs you find for peanuts on fleabay!!

This adapter has a specific construction where the 'tip' of the adapter has a hole in it and a channel towards the small chamber where the sensor now sits. A second channel returns the exhaust gasses to the main exhaust flow.

As such it MUST be fitted with the intake port (marked with a dot on the extender) UPSTREAM.

This means that the wideband sensor still gets to 'sniff' the direct exhaust gas stream, but a more limited and somewhat cooled down version.

The cheap 'MIL eliminiator' extender bungs just space the sensor out/away from the exhaust flow and this means that the sensor only gets very limited exposure to the gas flow and it's signal wil lbe worthless. Which is to be expected as these cheap bungs are meant to stop a cat-efficiency error by moving the second sensor out of the gas flow..

Another option, if the spacer is too long to fit, is to drill a hole in some 2 to 3mm copper plate and bend the plate backwards toward the sensor  so it works as a heat shield and heat sink for the wideband sensor.

Bye, Arno.

Don't think I would bother. Maybe if placed next to a turbo but I will be putting mine just after the narrow band which is approx 900mm down the exhaust.

Ideal place is 3ft away from the exhaust ports on a turbo or SC. Apparently. So the rear silencer.

peter also reccomends a heatsync bung to stop it from getting toasted al the time. This is what I will be putting in mine.

i had the bosch directly in the exhaust for probably 3 years now (or even longer, fitted it when i went SC), still works fine...

Did you tell him you had cams fitted? I was surprised he hadn't upped the ignition at idle to help smooth things out when I looked at your first log.
