I think we could do something pretty straightforward that will be cosmetic (ie not a weight saving thing) When I get my car back I'll have a proper look

I'll send him an email on the pricing, but how about a group purchase on the mold, and then chat with jonnyboy on grp reproductions?

Wouldnt mind seeing the molds. There are molds and molds. It could be totally useless if it hasnt been made professionally. Interesting proposition though. I was pondering on buying another car to do some development on so this may be a cheaper way of getting the product ready.

Just tried to join - most fields are distinguishable from basic German but specifics on address are proving difficult don't seem to be able to find UK or Great Britain as countries, someone with more advanced German may be able to help.......

There is a market I'm sure for these. If of the same price as your hardtops I'd buy one in a heart beat.

The original builder just explained to a cheap banter on how much work they were, translating in the fact that he made no money on it, even for 3.5k each. (keep CF and german engineering in mind here) R&D and fabrication was completely outsourced, which was charged by the hour. Only 10 were originally made. 2 for germany, 1 for italy, 1 for austria, and 6 to the "the island" for which i think it is the UK. Really weird, as none of those 6 ever popped up here, as far as i know. He is willing to sell the molds for a "fair price". Still waiting for reply.

I just emailed a German customer of mine to see if he might be able to act as a middle man. If he is suggesting anyting over about £1000-£1500 ish for them then after shipping and the very high risk of them being damaged getting over here I think it will make more sense to just make fresh molds. Just looking at at I know I could make that product for under 1k very easily. Possibly quite a lot under that depending on the fine detail of that rear mold and the brackets.

Jonny, what do you think it would take to convert that style to a clear perspex instead of slats?

Should be reasonably easy but you'd be looking at more tooling costs. The plastics guys tend to look for crazy volumes as well.

At work I literally spend millions on out sourced fabrication. I seem to remember the slats were attached via laser cut aluminium brackets & the same goes for the hinge. I could find a suitable supplier for this part of the project if this helps. Dumping the slats in favour of a clear panel is only doable if the panel is curved, otherwise it would sag in the middle. And yes I buy custom cut clear, perspex, extruded acrylic, cast acrylic and polycarbonate on a weekly basis too. Even if you put a curve on the panel you would still have to find a solution to losing the heat from the engine bay. Kind regards, Paul
