Project Flying Saucer Update: AUG - SEPT

So a mate of mine popped over and asked if I wanted to do a track day at Bedford on 2nd Sept (9- 5 open pit lane)

Of course I said hell yeah!

So began the prep work for track:

1. Fitted Gearbox breather and Catch Tank (Easy job apart from having to have double jointed arms and spanners)

Posted Image

2.     Not essential but decided to fit a hand held fire extinguisher in the pax foot well. (Another 2  minute job (1 per screw!)

Posted Image

3.     Also while in the foot well bolted down the pax turbo footrest and filled N/A footrest holes should stop the water coming in when on wet roads!

4.     Also fitted some grooved disks all round as the come up for sale a price I could not turn down (Cheers Lee) again easy job couple of hours including quick slap of paint on the callipers and copious cups of tea.

5. Oh and belt tensioner that with a bearing on the way out and of course the mandatory spanner check and fluids.

So the  2nd of Sept came around pretty quick and was up at stupid o’clock packing all the essential into the VX and mates VR6

So on arrival at Bedford got greeted by a member of staff  ‘Nice Lotus mate’ and was pointed to sign on.  A few fellow VX’er turned up which is always nice to see and before long as trading stories of how fast we were taking corners etc etc.

Cheers Joe love the vx I'm really happy with it. And you saw it when I first got it so you know how much work has gone into getting this far.

Yup Pro alloy one - I'll need to speak to you at some point about some more pro alloy bits.

So following on from Bedford:

Car ran great and performed better than expected although had a couple of issues which are now to be fixed

1.     Alternator bearing failing (noisy at 5-6000 rpm’s) Already have a replacement 100amp waiting to go on in preparation for s/c project.

2.     Destroyed N/S Engine mount and O/S looking like it’s on it’s last legs so have bought a set of Virbra Technics Fast Road top mounts and Powerflex inserts for the lowers.

3.     Still have a sticky hydraulic lifter that will need to be fixed .

4.      More annoying loosing coolant but internally rather than external. (Not down to tracking car this has been like this for a while)  Symptoms : loosing fluid 1liter in 300miles approx  have no mouse on oil cap but steam when taking cap off and coolant on underside of oil cap. Not much but is visible. Engine not been cooked or over revved in my ownership. (Slinborg???) Anyway I’m down to 2 conclusions. 1. The head gasket (Although I’ve been told this is very rare! And 2. Oil cool on the way out.  Anybody has the same issues I’d like to hear the if you found out what was the issue.

Also one addition not to everyone’s liking but have installed the pointless Girder/Interior light, seeing as I didn’t have an interior light it kind of justifies this…

Waiting to go on

So with all the jobs I need to do I’ve been thinking hard about engine rebuilds and s/c conversion but this is all down to how much cash I can scrape together as will not be cheap and my VX funds are pretty low! Really want to get this done for next season!

thats quite a bit for those miles. Does it drop even when you're not using it or only when running?

Checked around the bleed screw at the front or around the rad for any water leaking?

I had my oil cooler go here if it helps

Well I've bitten the bullet and bought a Saab B207 for my VX. I now need to start saving /selling like crazy to get the funds together for the rest of the parts to so I can have the engine my VX200 deserves!

I'm now on the lookout for:

[*] Set of Eagle Rods to suit  Z22SE 2.2 and Standard Pistons (not sure I am going to put in the forged pistons just yet as won't be supercharging now for a while due to VX funds being lower than Cliffies Time Attack Race Car!)
[*]TTV lightened flywheel and clutch assembly
Anyway here's some engine porn for now!

whip the cam cover off and check inside the cam cover for any surface rust, it seems that was the only part not covered in oil at the factory

Cheers Vocky good advice (I'll probably not use the cam cover and use the VX220 OEM one.)
