it would be a good time to whip the engine out and tweak it slightly :P balancer delete, lightened flywheel, cams, ported head, 4-1 exhaust manifold, the list is endless :D

Really a nightmare situation, I have my fingers crossed when ever the plugs are removed. Wierdly they always seem tight even though I know I did not fit them tight the time before. I suppose if they did break as they removed them, is it their fault or whoever fitted them last time? Though you would hope they notice something wrong and tell you rather than you telling them. Maybe you could come up with a compromise where you supply parts and they the labour? Hope it turns out well for you :grouphug:

I was thinking it'd be a good time to do some tinkering.

Stuwy, this happened to me - have a read of THIS

My argument was that if there was a leak when they were changing the plugs they should have reported it. As they didn't the leak must have occurred when the plugs were tightened. I stuck to my guns and they changed the head FOC. Good luck with it mate thumbsup

the torque wrench certificate will be in the post as will the data that they used to torque the sparks up.. and that means if its wrong it will be doctored..

A red herring IMO. They can have the most expensive torque wrench in the world, but if they don't use it, or set it to the wrong torque, the head still cracks.

it's not going to be a cheap repair either, parts will be around £500 and then the garage labour costs will more than double that figure as the clam needs to come off to swap the head.

head gasket £45
head bolts £20
genuine timing chain kit £175
engine coolant £20
another head £150 - £250 which will most likely need stripping down to inspect for problems and to fit new valve stem seals
valve stem seals £25

And all because someone over-tightened a spark plug :beat:

thumbsup
thanks for pricing that up for me, to put it bluntly. i cant afford it, if the AmD report is not conclusive and i can't "prove" GSS broke it then the car will be off the road until such a time i can get it fixed.. fingers crossed for Christmas bonus...

Sutol, thanks for the link, some hope in the misery of it all

I've not posted yet as didn't think could offer any help - if however you need to get it fixed yourself, and can find someone handy off the forum who'll travel down, I can have a word with my old man about using their garage for a weekend (large double with power, in Brentwood). Will be somewhere warmish, dry, and where we can make tea / bacon butties. All my tools are there from my days as a mechanic too. Should be anything you may need. I might even come out of retirement, whack the overalls on, and whistle through my teeth.

I can lend a hand too Stuwy if you go with Alexs idea. I'm a spare pair of hands rather than an Ed China type

As has been said, you need to write a decent letter briefly stating:
-The background, time and date it went to them, the nature of the services you requested
-The fault/damage
-The reparation you expect.

Then give them reasonable time to respond (usually 14 days)

Then you write to them again with an escalation route.

If it has not been resolved by then (and in my experience it always has been) then you can decide what your next steps are.

The best one is probably to get it done by someone else and then go through the procedure of claiming it back. You may decide then, that its not worth it, but make that decision at the time.

Thanks for the offers and support :grouphug: the car was dropped with AmD this morning so we will see what they say. If worst comes to worst i'll collect parts over a few months and then prob take you up on your offer Alex in a few months. :) but :( I am humbled by the level of support from you guys and I wish that I could some how repay it all. I hate being a pain and I hate asking for anything I try and do it myself. this time its way passed me.. :grouphug:

I would offer to help with the repair with Alex and Rob... but after the engine mount disaster and nearly cutting 3 fingers off when fitting your splitter, i dont think you'll want me anywhere near your engine  I can come and cheer you on though :P

If it helps Stu, take the head I have and pay me when you can.

Worst case scenario, bang in new head studs and head gasket and the car is back on the road at least.

AmD perfesional as always, shuold have taken it to them in the first place, the only reason i did not was becuase it was not that conveniant :beat: Anyway, went back to GSS and requested as a gesture of good will, they refund me my service money.. that should go some way to a new head and i don't mind a new chain as i was going to change it next year anyway.. just awaiting to hear from them :)
