By chance I recently stumbled upon this vx image and immediatly noticed the addition of the side vents in the style of the ones on the Exige. I really like the look of them and thus am now considering doing it to my car.

Functional or otherwise has anyone done this mod and if so what did you use? It looks from the picture that the actual Exige grille may have been used, how do these secure in and does anyone have a close up pic? I was hoping to make use of some sort of ready made grille that has a lip to slot it in flush to the body panel whilst covering the unpainted cut edges. If what is used on the Exige will achieve this then great if not can anyone think of anything else that would fit the bill? I have some RX-8 vents which are a nice shape but too big.

Also there is something else that doesn't appear to be right with that picture... The buttresses just don't seem right.

Yep, photochopped coupe back, by the look of it. I didn't think those vents were real on the Exige anyway?

I have several front vent designs done here if you want to have a look. Done on a range of cars that may be getting them soon. I have also done a range of rear vent designs. Would post pics but cant remember how/be bothered etc etc. Martin s

They are real in the sense that they have actual grilles that pass through the clam and are not just stuck on top of the body work. Whether they actually do anything benficial or are just for looks I don't really know...

It seems there is a fine line between a vent that is intended to aid airflow out from under the bonnet (of a front engined car?) those that are used to manipulate pressures within the wheel arches and those that are purely for styling purposes. It does not look like the inner arch in the pic below has any sort of cut out to allow air to exit the vent. Instead of which it just seems to go through to the enclosed void of the sill section which would suggest it serves no purpose?

If I was to do this mod with the view of achieving more than just looks would there be any reduction in front end lift if I was to mould in a duct behind the wheel that would allow pressure to escape out to the side?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean or if / how they could be implemented on the VX but regardless I would be interested in taking a look at what you have come up with.

There might be a hole into the wheel arch, but just not visible because it's hiding behind the edge of the wheel arch.

There are reay made arch vents in use as simple mouldings on cars such as the Mitsubishi evo and Ford Cmax and other cars which would tidy it up if you just want a single arch shaped vent. There is a thought that if you add mesh on the inside of the arch air will blow down the side of the car and go into the rear vents, not sure how scientific that is though. Martin s
