So was i wrong by assuming the tyre slides when in its optimum slip angle? So does it only start to slide outside that optimum angle?

So... the slip angle as i understand it is the angle between the direction the tyre is facing and the actual direction the tyre is going so the bigger the difference the bigger the slip angle. The bigger that angle the more slip you are experiencing. I assumed that as soon as the tyre points a different way from its intended direction then the tyre is slipping.

Surely the faster you are going around a corner, means the faster the tyre is turning so when it does slip past its slip angle and enters an understeer state am i right in thinking it would wear faster?

Yes, as soon as the tyre has any sort of load applied to it (ie a direction change as a reaction to a force) there is a slip angle generated. Imagine walking down the street with somebody leaning on your left shoulder. You would crab across and that's exactly what the tyre tread is doing.

So... you're looking at it slightly the wrong way... What you see as a 'slide' is the tyre passing over its optimum slip angle. For example, watch an historic race car around a track and it looks like its sliding around but reality is that the angles you see are a factor of the tyres optimum slip angle, so the car will hold peak 'G' at 4-5 degrees whereas a modern single seater would hold peak 'G' at less than 1 degree.

Ok,
So aslong as the tyre remains within its optimal slip angle (an angle in which the tyre isnt technically slipping) there will be little to no difference with tyre wear but as soon as you exceed that angle and it turns into understeer the wear effect will be greater as your ultimatly traveling at a greater speed.

If thats right i think i understand.

Thank you btw.

I just wany to say thank you to all of you for this. I now have an answer to something I couldn't get my head around with my current car - as having different tyres front and back, which having rotated the sets has had a weird effect on how it is steering - suppose that is what you get with cheap tyres.

Right, small update. The pressure fuel lines are in now and the pump and filter are fitted and ready. Shocks are on and the car is finally back on its wheels. Ride heights are currently 65mm front and 75mm rear however we may need to pick that up a little to get front clam clearance. Had the car cornerweighted and without the roof or coupe back and only 50% of the coolant and no fuel in, it was 794KG. Hoping to stay this side of 830 wet and ready to run.

Progress is slow but I have a few more pics as I have collected the bodywork from Steve Bellemy and a cracking job he has done yet again.

Chord ratio = length to depth ratio - which very approximately dictates it's aerodynamic efficiency and ability to flow air in a laminar fashion. Yours looks quite long so I suspect it is aleast 1:5, hopefully more. Mine is 1:10 and my wool string test using a camera showed laminar flow on the top and bottom when the wing was set a 0 degree rake angle (which is what you want ideally for efficiency).

what have you done !! you painted the louvres! noooooo!! you need to look at putting the aero catches on which sit inside the coupe rather than them metal ones which sit on top.. aerodynamic reasons... honest! lol

65mm front ride height sounds wonderful. I bet your front splitter will pin you to the deck like billio. I did some trial runs with mine at 80mm and it was really noticable that the front got a lot heavier (indicated by heavier steering) at mid speeds (ie > 90 leptons), so yours will be even more hopefully. I think the front splitter is way more important than the rear wing though, if that any help to you.
