Yep, they will never make the 12km range in any condition, but they are more than enough for most tracks. Many pro teams use these kind of stuff, and it's only on very long tracks (24h Le Mans or the ring) and on rallye stages that they switch to other more expensive/powerful stuff. You just need one that could have an external speak switch, and if possible where the antenna could be moved away from the walkie talkie itself (extension cable and permanently mount an external antenna)

quite a few of those need a license to operate, otherwise the free to use bands only have 0.5W transmit power on PMR 446Mhz

Chatting to a mate about range on his and he says you're welcome to try them out. I'll bring them along saturday morning and you can have a play about if you wish.

It does but it is a security thing rather than a convenience as far as I can tell.

I can try and organise some proper moulds (which can be fitted round your existing earphones) to make them more secure under your helmet and improve clarity.

How time sensitive is this? I need to arrange for a colleague to take the impressions.

Will it need to be one or both ears?

Sorry Mike even if we got the impressions done tomorrow I wouldn't have them done for then. Do you still want me to see if I can sort this for the future or is it essential for Knockhill?

No, not essential, still have five rounds to go. Lets see how the phone solution works at Knockhill and see how we go from there.

the sony hands free kit has the 3.5mm or 2.5mm jack ( can remember ) but anyway its a standard fit to operate most handheld radios in VOX mode, you could change the earpiece hard plastic outer to a silicon plug
