Understandably, I'm not using my VXT much at the moment, but I will need new tyres all round soon. Budget isn't really an issue, so I will get some decent rubber. I don't need 888s or similar tyres, but I would be keen to get some semi-track tyres, like R1Rs or AD08s. My question is, can you get these tyres to fit the standard VXT alloys? I've seen the right size for the rears, but I haven't been able to find the exact same size for the fronts. Will slightly wider tyres fit the front alloys ok? (205/45/17s for example) OR....is it better (and more expensive!) to sell my standard alloys and get 16s for the front? Cheers

From a bit of research, I found this:

Standard OEM wheels severely restrict tyre choice and overall handling upgrade routes. The standard front wheel is only 5.5" wide which means that the maximum safe tyre width is only 175mm. Opel also only specced the 17" front rim for aesthetic purposes, the VX220 (like the Elise) was designed around a 16" front wheel for optimum performance - all of our recommended wheel and tyre upgrades reflect this - the VX simply handles better on 16" front wheels.

I think that answers most of my questions :(

Probably best to get some TD1.2 wheels + fun tyres and keep your current wheels and tyres for day to day and winter usage. Just swap wheels when you need to. Depends if you have another car for poor conditions driving or not. Your choice depending on your usage pattern.

Yeh I've just been eyeing up the TD1.2s on the TMS website. Are they good value on there, or can you get them cheaper? A second set of alloys would come in handy at trackdays ;)

Loads on Ebay with various tyres, I'd have thought cheaper than Thorney - most things are!

If buying from ebay, its best to give the seller a call to check availability. I ended up waiting 5 weeks after being quoted 7 days. I guess if your ordering soon that wont be much of an issue though.

:yeahthat: Gave up and cancelled my order with them after 4 or 5 weeks with no sign of the wheels despite them saying they were ex-stock and would be with me in a couple of days, repeatedly.

Are the TD 1.2 on TMS just normal TD alloys? I don't want to be sucked into the sales hype of them saying they are special VX220 developed alloys if they are just standard!

If budget is not an issue getting TDs makes sense as it gives you access to a much wider set of tyres. Make sure you get TDs with the correct offset for VXs, or just buy extra spigot rings to correct it and make sure that on tyre changes the spiggot rings are kept on.

Spigot rings only alter/adapt the centre bore of the wheels. Spacers alter the offsets. thumbsup

They do fit straight on but you can get the exactly same wheels cheaper from other sources such as ebay and possibly direct from Team Dynamics I think?

Contact the seller of the recent TD groupbuy. They will sell you wheels still! You will probably not get the groupbuy price (£395) but it will certainly be better than the TMS price. AFAIK, same wheels exactly. All of the groupbuyers were pleased with the service, mine were delivered within about 2 weeks thumbsup
