Is it not as simple as breaking the connection between the positive terminal and the battery? (via a long loop of the red positive with isolator switch)
Not if you need to kill the ignition on a car with an alternator.

the ET racers use the cartek isolator , and yes moan about a lot for its faults

But make sure it has ignition kill if fitting to a competition car.
