Since I haven't done this before how long is the journey time? and whats the costs of getting over the water, or under it as the case may be?

Choices, choices.

via tunnel (35 mins) on Friday 3rd £90 return (on Monday 6th). Then you've got a 260 mile drive on the other side, circa 4 hours, to Le Mans.

via Newhaven->Dieppe ferry (4 hour crossing) on Friday 3rd, £125 return (on Monday 6th). Followed by a 170 mile drive on t'other side, circa 2.5 hours, to Le Mans.

via Portsmouth -> Caen ferry (3.5 hour or 6 hour crossing depending on which you get) on Friday 3rd, £230/£250 return (on Monday 6th). Followed by a 110 mile drive, circa 2 hours, to Le Mans.

I've looked at all of the costs and the tunnel and Newhaven ferry options work out to be almost exactly the same for the whole trip. The Portsmouth/Caen option is £50 to £70 more expensive and JG/Coco's Portsmouth/St Malo option is considerably more and really needs an additional day off at either end, due to the crossing timings.

Assuming I (or apparently Cocopops) can persuade Jo that we need to go again this year (she's not currently up for it), I'll be taking the tunnel option. It's a long boring drive but the total journey time is at least 2.5 hours shorter than any of the other options and being able to cross at a time to suit me/us and not the ferry company's timetable makes it a no-brainer, especially given the 2 hour leeway on your booked crossing time.

Your mileage may vary.

I drove from the Tunnel, but avoided all the peage , makes a much more interesting route, plus some nice places to stop for something to eat and have a stretch. Fuel stops at a hypermarche also a lot cheaper. Plus if the weather is wet , you don't want to be on the motorway with semi-slicks.

Funny that. We started off on the return journey on the non-peage N138 on the way home this year but when it started pissing down, decided to get back on the peage at Alencon. Was just soooooo slow on the other roads in the wet. Was a little bit :o in places but didn't stop Sticky & Dave going past us in the gloom and spray.

Took the scenic option on the way down but we had a few nights in Honfleur beforehand which made that option the best option.
