Scotland is a net exporter of goods whilst the UK as a whole is a net importer. The Whisky trade really is lucrativeI really hope Salmond's whole plan is not based around the revenue from 'their' oil!

That's even less plausible than the oil! If you can run a country on the proceeds from whisky and highland toffee than I doff my cap to you.Scotland is a net exporter of goods whilst the UK as a whole is a net importer. No point doffing your cap to me, I'm not a Scot!!! - just happen to know a little about their economy although TBH I (and most of the Scots i worked with at Forth Ports) don't believe independence is financially viable in the medium to long term. That's even less plausible than the oil! My place Pilkingtons glass had the exact same decision last year, we ended up taking the freeze on the pension and it cost us all big big money, but why would you throw away your job ? If your making a big loss things need to change it's not exactly rocket science, we halfed the staff with VR and shut one line, but hopefully now the place will get back into profit and expand in the future. This is a problem

Seems the unions still think it's the 70s at that plant.

Fudging unions! Also greedy/shortsighted workers in said union.
Exactly that, although the workers are probably somewhat in the dark with Union retoric. I know some unions serve a purpose to try and keep employers "in check", but when it comes to a stage where they are told you need to go back to work, or this place will close, and they don't go back to work, then what is to be expected.. The US Republican party was playing the same brinkmanship game last week with US finances..
Do we really needs unions nowadays, as employment law has pretty much taken over the aspects where unions see themselves as being useful?
On the general note of Independance, I do disagree with Scott, and think we should remain part of the UK, albeit perhaps with some additional devolved regional powers (which I thinkis Salmonds ultimate realistic goal).
I also disagree with the majority of completely ill-formed comments that insist Scotland recieves more money then it returns to Westminster - its relatively closely matched, and varies over decades and years dependant on various factors..

So 800 people are to lose their jobs thanks to the ego of a full time union official wanting his day of glory. Time union members saw through their full time officials desires and used their own brain. They should also do the maths on how much of a pay rise would be needed to recoup a week of lost earnings. Strikes IMO never make sense. This is a problem

My problem with it as I keep on saying is that all of it is just predictions and wish lists.
We hear promises of politicians (uk or scottish) every year and absolutely sh!te-all comes of it every time.
They campaign thinking they can make a change and then when they get into power they realise how hard it actually is to please everyone and they end up doing a heavily watered-down version of their promises, that's if they deliver at all.
