We have a massive coastline, hundreds of islands and offshore revenue. We clearly need a fking navy of some description. Even spending less than than our percentage we already do on defence we will be better defended by simply having forces here.
I think it depends on what you mean by "better defended". If you mean in response to the (unlikely event of) ruskies turning up and deciding that they fancy buliding a new ski-resort (they've became rather good at this - not) in Shetland, and taking a few barrels of the black stuff, then no, Scotland wouldn't stand a chance on it's own unless it was a part of NATO, in which case UK forces would be first responder most likely. Back to square one.
Its more likely to be a majority of small patrol craft, maybe a couple of older generation subs (assuming Faslane retained), a couple of destroyers, and some limited air defence, depending on how it would fit in with NATO requirements. Assuming we hadn't blown the budget on other things..
My point being that against anyone that really matters, we wouldn't be better defended. The threat of force is the more critical thing here. Plus Scotland would have no nuclear deterent, but I guess people have different views on that (I view it as a necessary evil)..

Air surveillance and defence is a lot more cost effective and delivers a bigger impact than trying to manage a massive coastline with ships/boats.

What would happen if we English wanted independence and cut off all the extremities?

George Galloways is almost as big a twat as Tommy Sheridan, and he actually gave a pretty decent speach on the subject recently too.. Not that I have time for any of them..
Like them or hate them and their beliefs, these guys can talk!

I still don't quite know what to take away from all this talk of independence.
Part of me wants to say "Ok guys, you win, have your independence and do what you wish", but a much larger part of me wants Scotland to stay. We don't need to be separating ourselves at this point in history. The future is through cooperation and friendship, not trying to make a point about what makes us different. I personally think it will all breed more hate towards both sides, which is really not needed, and all for what, stubborn Scottish pride?

But we can have cooperation and friendship without a union some would argue the cooperation and friendship would be stronger.
As a side issue,
I'm currently this far away from George Osbourne

The urge to go via the corner shop and grab a lettuce to hurl at him is quite strong
Hopefully he'll go into the Burke and Hare next door for a dance and give us all a break after a display of skanks boobies.

It was Thatcher who did it. Like her or loathe her the Scottish people didn't get her and she didn't get them. The number of Tory MP's dwindled to zero and never recovered and understandably many Scottish people wondered how come they were governed by a government they didn't elect.

Don't be a vegetarian with you're lettuce chucking - at least use some square sausage..
