I really can't be arsed to argue this point. The debate has moved on and this was covered months ago. Look at the attached response from the committee and government in detail also look at what the petition specifically asks for. Its not possible in the timescales and one man isn't a mandate to move the earth to make it happen.

You're blatently confusing a the petition with some sort of real movement or mandate. It is not that very clearly. 136 signatures represents 0.19% of the population of the islands.

They've made a mistake of validating it with a response. You do know a petition to the uk government requires 100,000 signatures to even be discussed in parliament?

Sounds to me like that 'debate' hasn't moved on; more like conveniently swept under he carpet ;)

If it was any relevance the other parties would be screaming it on TV and in every newspaper article, every interview you could ever see. The silence is deafening. Its just internet heroes who bleat about this sort of stuff. The rest of us are having a debate about the real issues affecting those who will actually vote and have to live here afterwards. Anyone can raise a petition. Anyone about anything. You should look at some of the others raised. And that is the last response I will give on it.

Don't be like that

I'm curious; why are you dead set against the Shetlands seeking independence then? or is it too  obvious?

A quick wiki would suggest 70% of the populous are in oil related jobs; makes you wonder which way they might vote on an independent isle if they were given the opportunity to vote as opposed to a weak petition no?

They've not asked to become independent.

A man has. And has gathered some other 136 signatures some from people who don't even live there.

The petition and I don't know why I'm still discussing this asks for a referendum on Shetland, Orkney and the western isles independence a week after the Scottish Referendum. Can you see why that would be difficult in itself? I might start one tomorrow to get an peninsula independent state of fife. Think I'll get a response too?

Aberdeen is an affluent place and has a lot of oil workers. Maybe Ross will raise a petition on his lunch break tomorrow for independent state of Aberdeen. I'll even sign it for a laugh. Other than that the purpose of posting the Shetland debate article was to illustrate the debate is split in the same manner as it is on the same issues across Shetland as it is across the rest of Scotland. Its a complete distraction.

Here's a petition launched the other day of moving the Scottish border South of the Tyne. http://www.thejourna...r-reach-7702369 Opinions on that?

Not really the point is it? you seem very defensive here...

The direct point in question (with regard to the referendum) is that the Shetland seem to be an annexe of Scotland with no rights of their own (should they want it)

Given Scotland's revenue would be materially effected if they decided they wanted to be independent; can you not see the relevance of the issue?

Its only an issue if they wish to become independent and they don't. There is no evidence that they do! Its a bit like saying wouldn't Luton be a bit shagged if central London left.

As for rights for Shetland, you should look at the official response given by the Scottish government.

I don't have an opinion either way and certainly don't understand the issues enough (other than knowing that Salmond is a cunt). But it strikes me that the No faction (majority?) are levelheaded and thoughtful in their arguments where as the Yesers are shouty, defensive and evade sensible questioning. Add in the morons who followed that bloke around on his 100 day tour and the whole debate becomes a shambles. It's embarrassing.

Busy day today man, maybe another time.. :D

Interestingly, I wouldn't recommend Aberdeen went independant - its short-term gain would be offset by the pain during long-term decline by its major industry. We've seen it before.

Plus, it would make places such as Dundee much more attractive and viable to invest and locate to..

See where I'm going with this..
