Why don't we get a say in it!

I have a feeling the Scots would be pretty shocked to see how the English would vote, which is why no one seems to bring it up in any discussions.

Martin S

A rare political commentary.

the EU isnt quite the same as the UK though... We have a common(ish) language, we share many services directly, there are other services that are semi shared (NHS etc) and so on. The EU is just a farce, but you could draw similar principles that twats in brussels dictate our fate..... much like they would if scotland joined the EU (oooooh the irony  )

Will scottish companies want a GSE / ESE / ASE otherwise they would be trading on the LSE and afterall, London is mean :)

Ross just hearing the RBS share price is still higher than it was in June. Markets fluctuate. Papers like a story.

But (if you read the story) you'll notice that the companies that have taken a share price hit are mostly those with significant Scottish operations. Add to that the Pound has dropped, where other currencies haven't. All are a result of the Yougov poll data at the weekend, showing the business may not be so sure about what's going to happen in their worst case scenario..

Just coincidence huh.. Also on the BBC news website if you can bear to look at it.

Its not a calamity, but lets hope it doesn't start a worrying trend (but I fear it almost inevitable it will)..

French farmers and their ever increasing demands for subsidies are a major reason why the EU needs fcuking off straight into the bin, in it's current guise.

Sorry Ross I wasn't arguing it was coincidence but that it had been somewhat overstated. Two stories to come out of it though... Also imagine how more stable the pound would be if an agreed CU had been done. #balanceofpayments

 But its not been overstated, thats what I'm saying. Some companies with mjaor Scottish operations have lost some share price value because investors see them as exposed to greater level of risk, that's all.

There is nothing to say the pound would be more stable in the event a CU was agreed. It couldn't have been agreed now anyway as we haven't had the vote yet. The existing line is that we won't have a currency union (anyone else have dejavu..?), as it impacts on the strength of the pound on more than just a short-term balance of payments perspective.

The SNP have consistantly rattled on about 'Balance of payments' for, well, ever.. But like most SNP stuff, its a very narrow view on the financial system, and something as complex as currency. Its a short-termist argument that a country will share its own soverign currency for the short-term benefit of increased 'mass', and the avoidance of a some reduction in value, again, in the short-term.

Real governments need to think much longer term than this. The worst case (and we'll cite the Euro again as an example) is that Scotland gets itself in a economic mess in the future, and drags the currency down with it, like what happened with some of the periphery countries in the Eurozone.

That's why, if a currency union is agreed (and it may well be), that the terms of that agreement will be major restrictions on Scottish spending and debt levels, effectively leaving many of those so called 'fiscal levers' impotent and outwith our control. That's why some nationalists are dead against the CU plan..

Despite Salmonds bravado, the UK holds virtually ALL the cards with respect to currency.. We could tell them to ram it, and create our own, but then peoples economic pain threshhold would be broken, and they'd vote No..

Today's downturn has been overstated. If you're struggling with that the video explains a bit... You've then given us another disaster scenario. Those seem to be your favourites. All of that can and has happened anyway. Deviation of our economy to a Spain or Greece level is ridiculous. It would never happen because none of us would let it neither would an opposition. I guess that's up to us to keep tabs on eh? Currency union levers points repeated. Aye aye aye. We'd still have many more levers than we do now. As for the other post I fully approve of Connery as the first M of Scotland

The video makes sense, and doesn't contradict what I'm saying.. Nothing is overstated (for the last time, hopefully). My first point is that this could form a trend if continuing data (from polls) continues to point in the yes direction..

As usual, nationalist mantra - hope for the best, plan for the best.. I though one of the main points of independance was to be able to shape our economy, re-prioritise spending and shift away from the neo-liberalistic approach the the UK is so fond of? How can you do that with Tory neo-liberalists in control of what you can spend and save, level of government debt, all the while juggling the volitile income stream from offshore oil.. The whole point is that both countries are likely to diverge over time. I know the next bit will be "but we'll use a different currency then, we'll be able to vote for what ever currency we want"...

You guys could have got a job in the ECB round about 2007-ish.. :D

I never said Spain or Greece, I would probably mention Ireland as the nearest similar country (within the Euro). I'm not sure how 'we are going to keep tabs' on the government and associated spending levels - what we going to do, vote them out (even though people will demand more spending..)

If you do not understand the importance of the currency aspect, what other 'levers' will we have? Please enlighten me...

You pay taxes Myles? You need to get a better accountant  I'm loving the media coverage over the last few days. Some tabloids have gone into overdrive, so much so that the stories and so called facts are now just simply ridiculous.

On the Range Rover forum there are many people from North of the border, and the overwhelming majority are very much against independence. Here's one quote.

To give you a bit of context to what Scotland's like at the minute, I've been told to f*ck off back to England because I politely told someone I'm voting no, and I've been called a traitor and a Tory c*nt along with various other things because I express views that I'm in favor of the union.

I guess these are people JK Rowling has been calling death eaters.

I've not seen any of that. I doubt Ross has either. You have to wonder who he was discussing his vote with. It doesn't sound like something friends would say to each other does it? So who exactly said this?
