what about the other 49.9% , the 'no' vote . if this happens then you will have a ind-scot but alienated half the country

Whatever the outcome, this vote and the tensions, opinions, and in some cases hatred that it has caused is so divisive. It certainly won't unite Yescotland or Scotland but potentially cause long-term cross party resentment.

I think talk of civil war is premature. If Scotland settles on a Yes vote and it all goes well, I can't see the No voters being overly bothered. They'll get their cheque from Alex for £1500-£5000 through the door in 2016, still drive on the left, still have their job with BP/RBS, still have cheap supermarket food, still have the Queen and still have the pound won't they? Oh, wait a minute... :P

Sillars' quote gets even better:

15:45

Former SNP deputy leader Jim Sillars has said there will be a "day of reckoning" for BP and the banks in the event of a Yes vote.

Mr Sillars said: "This referendum is about power, and when we get a Yes majority, we will use that power for a day of reckoning with BP and the banks."

He has also said BP would be nationalised in some form in the event of a Yes vote.Mr Sillars said: "If BP wants into the 'monster fields' in the areas west of Shetland, it will have to learn to bend the knee to a greater power - us, the sovereign people of Scotland.

"We will be the masters of the oil fields, not BP or any other of the majors. If Bob Dudley thinks this is mere rhetoric, just let him wait. It is sovereign power that counts. We will have it, he will not."

Mr Sillars added: "As for the bankers. Your casino days, rescued by socialisation of your liabilities while you waltz off with the profits, will be over. You will be split between retail and investment, and if your greed takes the latter down, there will be no rescue."

I think there is way too much picking and choosing going on by both sides.

The reality is that the future is completely uncertain.

In a world where small changes make huge ripples, my personal opinion is "Why rock the boat when it's getting along 'ok'?".

I'm not saying what we have now is perfect but it's more substantial than an unknown entity.

The second point is that for the last couple centuries, the entire planet has been building bridges, forming alliances, joining together to better their nations and their relationships.

Why would you want to go and put a barrier up right now? Again, it is my personal opinion that this will cause more hatred between Scots and non Scots, will push more of a wedge in between the two countries and generally be quite unsavoury.

Ultimately, what I'm trying to say is that I cannot see any real hard reasons behind people in the yes camp. In fact, I'm actually more frustrated about the lack of reasoning than I am the fact this is all a 'thing' in the first place. I don't believe in the whole 'Scotland will be better off because of it', for the same reason I don't believe in god, because there is absolutely no quantifiable proof that it will. Rough projections and guesswork is not proof.

Sounds like a National Socialist rant in a Munich Beer Hall. He doesn't think an emerging country will have any clout against a major oil company, does he?

Remember, it might be the rUK (okay, lets be honest the English) that start tearing bridges down if the EU In/Out referendum happens and there hasn't been some substantive changes to the way it operates in a couple of years time. Or if that spanner Farage gets his way.

TBH, he's right... That's what its always been about, but its been nicely gift-wrapped in "fairer, more prosperous society" paper so it can sit under the Christmas tree, looking very appealing, with excited and expectant people waiting to rip it open to see what's inside...

"This referendum is about power, and when we get a Yes majority, we will use that power for a day of reckoning with BP and the banks."

Out with the old establishment, in with the new establishment..

I'm sure he is. Just surprises me that on a day that the so carefully controlled pro-business, pro-stability positive spin machine that is the SNP would theoretically be in some kind of damage control mode trying to reassure big business and the electorate that all will be fine and dandy, somebody of some (I presume) seniority is allowed to voice that one to anyone listening.

Still, I guess if you're the oft quoted Aberdeen Asset Management, all is rosy - unless of course they've got any significant investments in banking or petrochemical.....

Why "place"? Why not "station" like the rest of the UK?

Too many Scots turning up there expecting to report a crime thinking it said Police Station? :P

poll·ing place noun a building where voting takes place during an election, typically one that normally has another function, such as a school.
