Removing A Drive Shaft.

I'm replacing the PS drive shaft seal on my VXT. I have the wishbones off, caliper removed and am set to remove the drive shaft. I've tried pulling (from the inside part closest to the Gearbox) it out but can't move it. Do I have to do anything else or is it just a case of putting more oomf into it? Cheers Steve

You need to give the cv joint a tap use a piece of wood so you dont damage it or lever it out with a screwdriver to pop them out of the box

Watch out for the gearbox oil that will p*ss out once the shaft is removed. Jacking up the car a high as you can will prevent a big flow thumbsup

And it's out. Is it just me or does VXL OEM GB oil smell like cheap red wine :) Just the easy job of removing the seal now. So far I've mangled most of it and it hasn't budged grr!

Got that out now too. Any idea why there would be a thin long spring around the inside circumference of the seal? Can't see in on the EPC.

Right, i've ruined one new seal trying to fit it in. Only cost me 99p so no big deal and have just ordered another. Any ideas on how I can get it in without damaging it? Tried the socket thing but a 32mm one isn't quite big enough, I think I might have to buy a 42mm one. I was wondering if there is any clever way to keep it in place before I push it in.

you just need something which fits over the seal, socket, metal pipe etc

Thankfully I work for a company with a large marine engineering department and have favours to call in. The guys are making me a custom tool to do the job FOC thumbsup

rats didn't have a big enough socket so it went in crocked, have to replace it

I have a spare which I would offer to you but I'm changing my drive shaft early next week and want to hold onto it just in case. If I don't need it you can have it FOC but it won't be till Wed at the earliest. 46mm is the smallest you can get away with, I recon a 48mm might be a bit better fit though.

Scaffold pole is the exact correct size to tap the gearbox seal in with. Ask a scaffolder for a 6 inch cut off from one of his poles :)
