I agree VIX, basically any exhaust system that is aftermarket is technically illegal. Milltek, et al all should be banned :D I will be having a good read up, on the laws Atom to get me head around it all. The fine was £30 quid, but my worry is the threat of an ASBO... like issued for the ferari that techi mentioned.

It's not really an ASBO. It was called a Section 59 notice that meant the police could seize the car if they ever felt it was causing a nuisance or offence. It's a stupid all powerful law which gives the police the power to seize a car for just about any reason they think they can justify and worse still it's all seems to be down to their opinion (and nothing scientific). Even worse, PCSO's can issue the notices as well. I'm sure somebody on here had the same thing a few years back in Brighton, which is famous for issuing them.

Casting my mind back to the days of working in a transport company and having to study all the C&U regs, I don't think there was a specific limit for cars (there definitely was for bikes) but that any replacement exhaust fitted shouldn't vary significantly on noise, from that of the standard exhaust system. Pretty much the same as the MOT regs now. A lot of us risk a fail if the MOT inspector is in a shitty mood on the day.

Just to clear something up, the VSE was a dealer fit option, not a factory fit option. Track only is just a different way of saying not for road use. It was always something I wanted fitted to a demo & then wanted removed when then did!

Only ever fitted 1 Miltek back box, would've been more but somebody had a minimum order quantity of 3 at a time*. *3 at a time to make it worthwhile

There may be a technicality on the measurement here. This should be done at 50cm and 45 degrees from the tail pipe. Unless they can prove those then its an invalid reading. Its a technicality that may escape the asbo but its only a matter of time before they sort it out. I have a dB meter if anyone local needs a look see.

I'm sure the police have done their homework. This is just another example of new laws created by government to raise cash from the motorist. And the aftermarket manufacturers will have to shut up shop and make everyone redundant, more unemployed. Well done politicians!!!!! Keep on lining your pockets and claiming your exaggerated expenses... I sold an Alfa 155 V6 thingy once, that was really loud as standard.

Pisses me off that everytime I go out I see drivers using their mobile phones; every time I go out at night I see people driving on only one headlight or in some cases only one sidelight and in reduced visibility I see drivers with no lights on at all. Together with pissed up East European lorry drivers and people driving without licenses, tax or insurance, these are the people who should be targeted, not people with a handful of db too many (however defined).

dave let us know how you get on down the station today. If I wasn't going down to the Essex meet I'd off popped down as well. this seems like a law that is not common knowledge or inforced all the time ie they dont want people to know about so they can target specific groups. was the fezza mentioned earlier with an aftermarket exhaust? i'm confused how they can create a law that allows 1 car to have whatever db it wants from factory (within production limits/laws) but another that was created quiet to have anything over standard.

That's the big problem. There is no law (in the UK although there does appear to be mention of a Euro law) that sets a limit for the exhaust noise on a standard production car, as far as I can tell. That's why TVR could get away with what they did. What you fall foul of is significantly altering the volume of the standard car by either modifying the standard system or fitting a replacement. Yes, the Fezza had a Tubi exhaust on it, as fitted by the main dealer. :beat:

That'd be my main gripe with this then. A small euro car with an aftermarket exhaust hitting 90db is illegal but a high power italian supercar from the factory hitting 95dp isn't.

Arggh makes my blood boil thinking of all the implications a law as stupid as this would possibly have if it was enforced fully.

While I think of it what kind of implications does having a s/c or itb etc have on it. Obviously they produce noise of thier own (which doesnt come from the exhaust?)

The SC doesn't really add any noise until it's actually under load on the road. We'd all be hung, drawn and quartered if the Police started doing drive-by tests on SC'd VX's with anything other than a brand new Milltek. Even then, we might be in dodgy territory if in the "opinion" of the officer, it was louder or likely to cause offence or distress to the public. :beat:

By which time, apart from in 2nd, you'd be exceeding the speed limit anyway so, of course, it's not an issue. :)
