noise levels anything louder than a standard system is already an mot failure, however it can only fail by interpretation of tester. ie as i vaux tech i know the sound level roughly of lets say a standard corsa d,but when i come to mot one and it is clearly ridiculously loud, then it has to fail.If its very close and i cant really tell then privelage has to be given to the presenter(ie the owner) and its a pass. however if i get say anything other than a vauxhall and its seems slightly louder but im unsure, then privelage must be given to the presenter and not a fail.If extremely loud then it must fail. all this aside,if boxes are missing etc it fails anyway. Basically what im saying is,theres no db test for mot,its down to my interpretation and knowledge, but if unsure as a close call, the privelage must be given to the presenter(car owner) sorry my terminolgy is bad,its sunday night and im shattered

Is this noise s*** for real?! Just reading through the thread, really seems to be a lot of holes in this, so i'd definitely get further clarification and contest it. Wonder if the Modified Evo's/ Scooby's we see on Police Interceptors are given the same treatment? Just a thought lol

There seems to be far too much 'interpretation' for noise levels for it to be made law that can result in a fixed penalty.

Makes for interesting/disturbing reading. Will be keeping an eye on this. I think we all appreciate the efforts you're going to to get to the bottom of what is actually written law. Top man.

Interesting thread... http://forums.overcl....php?t=18375819 Timining is interesting, still no "evidence" or laws discussed.

Agreed. Would be handy if we could get a "one pager" on the law and how it affects us. We could then print it and keep it in the car to show we understand and adhere to the law, whilst not accepting roadside db checks etc.

But in reality it wont help. I wonder if we can find out if any other counties feel its a great spend of the public purse to do the same checks? I will do some investigation. I tried to measure mine at the weekend but the road noise was reading 50 db and I gave up as the meter was all over the place - dick head.

Maybe we should just quote the below -

Exceptions to regulations 55 to 58

59. Regulations 55, 56, 57(2) and 58 do not apply to a motor vehicle which is—

(a)

proceeding to a place where, by previous arrangement—

(i)

noise emitted by it is about to be measured for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not the vehicle complies with such of those provisions as apply to it; or Yes Officer, glad you stopped me as I am just off to test this myself in a better environment that by the road

(ii)

the vehicle is about to be mechanically adjusted, modified or equipped for the purpose of securing that it so complies; or

If it is of any help, you can find the manufacturers drive by noise levels if you do a search on http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk

2001NA VX220 74dB
2002NA VX220 73dB
2003T VX220 75dB (who said turbo's were quiet!)
2007T Europa 75dB

Strangely, those noise readings also appear to be the same as the tyre noise drive-by limits set out by the EU.

Yes, they are whole vehicle numbers, so not just exhaust/induction or tyre etc. (at 50kph during in gear accels I think)

I can only imagine that this is the same as driving without an MOT, in that you need to say you are going to do it first; "sorry officer, I am just on my way to an MOT station" said while wearing a cocktail dress and having 4 bottles of wine on the passender seat.

I must admit I am confised on the classification of the vehicles, and particularly the sub 1000kg category.

This would be very difficult to separate out on a SC'd car, as induction noise would count for a lot, and presumably not be part of the measured value, as it is not part of the exhaust (which is the part in question with the legislation)

This is really helpful, thank you. I am now on the hunt for a car that is louder than mine as standard.
