Strange offsets in Switzerland. The rears are the same as the German ones but the fronts are different. You can fit 205's without rubbing. It was the only way to get them type approved. They were eye wateringly expensive. Should have 'em fitted next week, then apart from maybe a remap and the MK II of my sat nav holder my modding will regrettably be complete.

Darn those Swiss MOT inspectors.

the offset difference, is that to comply with bodywork sizes and tyres sticking out too far?

I don't think so as the rears are the same offset as the German ones - although you are limited to 235, so maybe. The tyres must not rub and maybe they didn't accept the wheel arch cut outs.

Initial impressions (they were fitted this morning, so I've not driven with them much) are...wow, feels so planted, front end grip is just way better, stunningly so. This is on KU39's. Will post a more detailed write up after the weekend, which I will be spending in Italy. Really need to clean the car as it looks stupid - spotless shiny wheels, dirty bodywork.

So what are they like?

Well, I've always thought people who complained of understeer just can't drive (fast in, slow out), but I like the balance, if not the grip, of my winter wheels, which are 185 front, 205 rear. I did find the original 175/225 tyres a little understeery. I now have the balance, or better, of my winter wheels in the summer. The front of the car is now much grippier. You can feel it just breaking, where the ABS is much more reluctant to chirp in.

Ultimate grip seems much higher. I will confess, I'm still exploring the envelope here. Wet grip also excellent.

Overall, the car seems noticeably more planted and secure. Actually, it's transformed.

Downsides?

You'd expect the ride to suffer, but while it seems firmer, it's a little less crashy in extremes. I prefer it.

Weight of the steering? Well, I drove lots of hairpins and had no problems. Maybe all those years of self abuse are paying off in terms of arm strength, but I don't think so. I'd happily install a quick ratio rack.

The only thing that is noticeable is at high speed (+100 mph (or is that kph officer?)) on rutted roads the tramlining means you do have to hold on more.

It was expensive, but I'm well chuffed. Really, aesthetics of the wheels aside (I really like them), the standard tyres are crap in comparison. It's a really serious upgrade.
