Since having a new fuel filter fitted today I've started hearing a whining noise which sounds like the fuel pump?the noise was never there before the fuel filter change.i can only hear it on tick over because it gets drowned out by engine noise when driving.i was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?ive let the car get hot and been on a 50mile drive but the noise is still there.

which pump have you fitted? The C(not M)S is very whiney. (though i've either got used to it, or it has quietened down a bit)

Sorry i didn't read the post properly (not the first time, nor the last  ) Can't see why the filter would have made any difference.

That's what I thought?thats why I thought I'd post?only thing I can think is it's the sound of the fuel running through a clean filter?was hoping its not been fitted with the flow going in the wrong direction?

James do you find when you're down to less than 10 litres and on tickover you can hear the fuel being returned to the tank. Mine sounds like a washing machine on rinse cycle. Fill up with fuel and no noise nor when you get moving.

No, but lee's sounds just like that. Mine is more of a constant whine, which i can also hear on lee's car. It's amplified with the roof on.

pretty sure the horse pissing in your tank sound just the return/overflow, you notice it more with the higher volume pump because because of the um.. higher volume :D on a related note, you'd be surprised how hot the fuel in the tank gets, with the fuel rail and pipes in the engine bay they soak up a lot of heat and with some of the fuel returning back to the tank it gets really hot, and that was sticking my hand in about an hour after turning the car off. I'd imagine on track it'd get a lot worse.

Apologies for bringing this up again, but I appear to have similar symptoms. I have changed the fuel filter and can now hear the fuel pump whine. Wasnt anything I had ever really noticed before but thats not to say it wasnt there? Filter looked to be much the same as the one I took off, but a definite constant whine is present now?!

It's possible that now that you have a new fuel filter that the existing pump has considerably less resistance to overcome, hence it spins faster thus making a different noise (maybe in harmonic res with something). Nothing to worry about IMO (so long as you dont have a fuel leak!)

Thanks Nev, I thought that it might have been working harder due to a leak but ive had a good check and there is nothing present. Will keep an eye on it just in case.

Just for the record,my fuel pump went quiet again after a few days, now i find it's only noisy on start up for about 30seconds then it goes quiet again. Never had any problems with it,just seamed strange after a new filter, guess Nev's hit the nail on the head with it.
