Just put my tullet system back on whilst I tinker with the 2bular. I've found the cat substrate is loose in the pipe rattling up and down. Fortunately its not made a bid for freedom yet but I was wondering how many have had tullet cats fail like this? 1) FLD 2)

My first one did, almost from delivery (as did one of my Pipers) but the second one in the swappable cat section appears to be fine.

My system has never worked. Went stoopidly loud from new and has just gone back on only to find the dodgy cat. Lame! 1) FLD 2) Techie

Are the fails from Supercharged cars only - is it worth annotating the list with induction type? From quick look at the above, they all look like SC cars...? Do they run hotter, hence accelerate the breakdown?

They run far too rich and then kill the cat.

On that basis, a fairly unmolested NA should be ok?

Errr, no. I've never managed to kill a cat, no even when my engine was over fuelling enough to give me bore wash and about 15mpg on a cruise. They've just got a sh*t substrate that isn't attached firmly enough within the casing and come loose. Then when it's off the car you can feel the substrate move backwards and forwards 5mm when you tip it one way or the other.

I beleive its them running retarded which in turn gives a high EGT. This melts the braze on the substrate meaning it moves / cools / sets / moves etc until all the braze is gone. A staked cat wont move so you tend not to loose the braze. My tullet cat has done less than 500 miles (switched it out) and is fooked. Bag of crap system, has never done what they claimed.

No idea what the state of play is with my stage 3 and the blower cams but, for my original high compression stage 2, Courtenay certainly had to retard the ignition. Once I'd got the uprated rods and lower compression pistons fitted, the ignition was advanced back to it's standard timing during all of the part throttle mapping.

Add to that, welded brackets requiring the heat shield to be cut, and exhaust tips that don't exactly look good for very long and it seems that there are some questions to be answered.

Mine (3.0" system) didn't need any heatshield cutting. Certainly not any more than the Milltek did in the first place or any of the numerous Pipers after that. Tailpipes look fine as well.

Good to hear thumbsup. (Milltek doesn't require any heatshield to be cut - least it didn't on mine)
