This might have been asked before (and might be a stupid question) but I can't find the answer with the search but is it feasible/possible to rotate the na engine such that the exhaust exit on the bulkhead side rather than boot side of the engine bay? I believe the turbo engine is this way round and was wondering if the na can be rotated throuh 180 degrees. I guess anything is possible with enough cash/time/motivation but just wondered if this would be prohibitively difficult.

Only if you can get a gearbox that drives in the other direction.

I figured it wouldn't be straightforward.... Probably more hassle than it's worth then.

This arose from a discussion at work with a colleague who is quite into tinkering/modding his cars. We were talking about alternative exhaust routings and one option that we looked at would be easier if the exhaust were to exit on the other side of the engine so just thought I'd see if it were possible to fit it the other way. Given that it seems that it would require at least changing the gearbox it doesn't seem worthwhile taking that line of thinking any further :)

Option 2b; fit a C20XE engine with the turbo gearbox and engine mounts...

Sorry to hijack, but this has got me wondering -> Why are the Tubby and NA engine's the opposite way round?

Z20LET (C20XE/C20LET etc.) cast iron block engine family vs. Z22SE alloy Ecotec family... Block orientation is the same, only the heads flow in different direction...

In my head that seems a very logical thing to do, but would probably be an epic arse to do.

ME Thinks It is a rumour,

The Swindon XE's had the 'flow' swapped to get a better exhaust route and to lower the engine... the 'ram air' bollocks people spout didn't actually add any power/torque over what the exhaust did. And XE in the back of a VX is totally possible but in order to have sensible/useful length trumpets you would have to cut the boot out/use the boot as an air box.

Agreed
I have found an image of a reversed XE but unable to post

Yeah but just remember Swindon have crap customer care and aren't interested in finding and sorting the faults on their race engines. All they want to do is charge you £2k to enable full power for each race/test day and then turn it off again. :P

Not sure whether it's just the angle of the picture but that must have a really compact bellhousing, given the location of the turbo.

the Z28NET has a similar position for its turbo, has very compact exhaust headers ( 2 banks v6 )
