Racechrono finally went Pro yesterday and now has built-in video recording, dash/gauge overlays and OBD support. I've had a beta version for a while and it seems to work very well (though I've only tested it with the Audi which doesn't barf when asked to output OBD data unlike the NA's ecu). 

What camera can you use for the video or do you have to record separately and overlay?

It does everything in one device for you. So once recorded you can view everything at the same time. Only issue I can see at the moment is this is not yet a solution to uploading to YouTube etc as the video recorded is raw is no overlays, which is better from a flexibility point of view anyway. I have a gopro so prob won't use video feature as phone battery probably won't last like the gopro will, plus need my phone to receive calls... My NA does not barf with the OBD connected..

Yup, afraid so. Time to get something vaguely modern. The application is quite heavy (though not as bad as Harrys Lap Timer is on Android) on the phone, especially if you're using external GPS and OBD for data acquisition. Chances are, if you had something from the last couple of years it would have a plenty good enough camera for HD video of one form or another. You can probably pick up a capable enough PAYG mobile from any of the mobile networks for <£100.

 

My NA does not barf with the OBD connected..

 

I bet it will at some point. I don't bother with OBD at all any more as I have a proper datalogger but even just trying to log throttle position via OBD and nothing else at all, I'd get the occasional misfire as the ECU chokes.

Don't think the alpha ecu for the iTBs will support the data input Video and timing will be better than what I have at the mo.

You need my old Performance Box and Micro Input Module (MIM supports hard wired sensors and an RPM pickup) for some data logging.

I use the new Harrys lap timer petrol head edition for andriod, I use a Dual gps blue tooth with it for more accurate logging ,They seem to work quite well as does the video .

I use mine with a Samsung Galaxy S4 The Dual is the one Harrys lap timer recommended so I  went with that . Dual do two options one for £90 or the newer version for £130 ish . Amazon seem as cheap as most places.

I did even than that I have one on long term loan FOC , My mate iis working on a contract abroad,I tried to get the car as well but no joy there.LoL

Am I right in thinking that, purely for lap time purposes, a phones built in GPS (Sammy S3) would be reasonably accurate enough ?

Not really bothered about analysing my line, just the time difference lap on lap.

As long as your happy with +/-1 second accuracy (and probably a bit better than that with some software interpolation), the built-in GPS is fine, as long as you can mount it somewhere that gets a good reliable GPS signal.
