RDC Promotions would like to join the rest of the short oval racing family in paying our respects to Saloon Stockcar ace 311 Steve Newman who was tragically killed in an accident on the sixth lap of the British Championship Final at Mildenhall Stadium on Saturday, June 16.
Steve was laying seventh in the race at the time of the fatal accident having established himself as one of the leading contenders in the event, having won his first qualifying heat and finishing fifth in his second heat to earn him a second row starting grid position in the 34 car main event.
Steve had become a familiar face and force in the Saloon Stockcar division for many years, having moved into the formula from the 1300cc Stockcar class at King's Lynn and while he also enjoyed the occasion dabble in other formulas with odd appearances in Big Van Bangers and BriSCA F1 Stockcars it was the hard hitting Saloon Stockcar formula where his heart lay and it was a formula which matched in many ways his unique character which will make him greatly missed around the raceways.
An uncompromising, tough, often ruthless racer but always entertaining, his no nonsense, take no prisoners style of racing earned him many fans, and rivals, over the years and you could almost guarantee that when the familiar looking 311 Saloon Stockcar was on the raceway, action would follow and he would not give an inch in his battle to take the chequered flag.
Despite his tough exterior on track, Steve was a very popular man off the raceway with fellow racers, fans and officials. Despite giving no quarter inch to any driver on the track he would be among the first willing to lend a hand to others off the track and in fact he spent much time on Saturday night at Mildenhall helping other racers with their cars so they could continue to compete for the British Championship.
His willingness to help the sport also extended into sponsorship and Steve had backed several Saloon Stockcar racing events at Mildenhall and beyond in recent times and was one of the sponsors of the weekend's race meeting which carried one of the biggest purses ever seen in the formula.
However sometimes his determination and aggression would leave Steve in hot water with meeting stewards and on more than one occasion he found himself in trouble with the powers that be. On one occasion he appealed a racing suspension to the Saloon Stockcar Association and in pleaded his case he told the panel of promoters, which included RDC's Ron Coventry, "Racing is my life, when I'm not racing, I'm not living." Steve was a through and through racer, one of the many who lived and breathed the sport and it will be a poorer place without him.
RDC would like to extend its heartfelt condolences not only to Steve family, including his two young children, and many friends but also to the entire Saloon Stockcar racing community. To all of the drivers, their families and teams who are no doubt feeling the same painful emotions so many are at this time.
Furthermore RDC Promotions would like to extend a massive message of thanks to all the RDC team and the medical team on hand on Saturday night who did everything possible to help Steve. We would also like to thank all the drivers and fans for their patience and understanding when the end of Saturday's meeting as well as Sunday afternoon's race meeting was abandoned. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment caused and we hope we have your understanding and support on the matter.
We are also incredibly grateful to all those who have sent messages of support and well wishes to RDC Promotions which is greatly appreciated.
We have many catchphrases and buzz words we use to describe Saloon Stockcar racing at Mildenhall Stadium and beyond and many of these apply to Steve Newman but one perhaps does it better than any other.

Very sad news, only bad news makes the press when it's short circuit oval racing.we had a minute silence at Buxton raceway yesterday.
That is sad although short circuit oval not only gets great press in Motorsport News but attracts viewing paying crowds far in excess of any other National Championship outside BTCC.
