a numberplate without a year prefix can work well on the Porsche as the models changes are so minor, plus many can be retrofitted.

Sweet! The 996 has become one of motorings best buys! Used to have a couple of boxster 3.2s loved them both.

the only problem I've seen is a common one, badly scored inner rotor wear on the front disc

I thought the 3.4s were notoriously bad too?

See my location? Gifted to me due to the amount of time i spent in porker showrooms a few years back. What finally put me off was my old mans 996 needing a third engine and the fcuking appalling way Porsche UK treated him after 25 years of owning 911's I'd post JG's bargepole >here< if I could

having tried both, the std carrera is better imo. though odly on phase 1 it was the other way round.

I loved the non S i drove in 09 so much that if there had been anyway my credit card provider would have allowed a £66,437 (15% vat at the time) limit, i would have bought it. The perfect everyday car. very special and yet practical and livable day to day.

It's not really though is it?

My old man spend well North of £200k on 911's and had to pay half for the first engine replacement (just out of warranty) and when that went pop PUK wouldn't replace it because 'you got the first one @ 50% off' that after only 20k miles

The final straw was a part going at the tune of £3k which should have been replaced with at least one of the engines. So he punted it in at 80k.

IIRC the engines are circa £20k a pop

Nice cars, i'd have one in a heartbeat....but I'd be fearing a massive bill every time I turned the key

no no, at the porsche day in silverstone with half a day in each, the 911 constantly and relentlessly showed the cayman up as being its less able, less tactile, less intimate and less involving, inferior counterpart. (cayman S pdk vs 911 997 pdk (p2) CS2)

I had a laughable meet with a Porche Carerra S2 the other week, who tried it on. I reckon a VX with 280 BHP would have matched him for power and certainly any vx would have out handled it around the corners (though maybe it's driver was over-cautious, you can never tell). On paper, only the GT2 and GT1 seem like they would actually be worth driving and they are such crazy money, it is beyond most people's outlay.
