I stuck up a request, and popped out to Halfords and when I came back there were 16 replies!

Yes, don't do that.
Average response time is about 10 min for technical questions over here.
Stay away for a few hours and you will be accused of not caring enough.

Out of curiosity, is the Elise 'as well designed' as the VX. i.e. same issues, or are these ancillaries specially designed for the Vauxhall ?

The S2 doesn't have a front opening bonnet like ours. You have to unscrew the mesh/vents to get to whats underneath.

The S1 has a cable and the vxl garage I went to (who bust the OE one) fitted this to mine. Fook me, what an abortion they made of it.

Hey Ken, those furry bits on the cable trunking don’t look standard to me, are you sure that you have not been fiddling on the side? :P :D

Dave, do I honestly look like the kind of bloke that would get himself upside down (and stuck) in a footwell of a VX to 'trim' my trunking?

OMG - I had a quick look today but my head-cold suddenly got worse upside-down in the footwell. When it's cleared in a few days I'll have a crack at this... Thanks! Graham

The VX position: Head under the dash, feet in the air over the passenger seat. I fell asleep in mine like that!

OK, so I chickened out and gave it to my usually reliable garage. They think the previous owner butchered the front bonnet lock in particular where the cable bolts on. They've got a new cable and a new lock. Could someone please photograph their lock and show how the cable attaches so they can get it back together? Thank you! Graham PS If the weather's anything like here, you might not want to go out for a couple of days...
