Friends, I love my VX220 and I dare say something is wrong with the engine. In brief - 1) When the engine ticks over it pulsates between 800-1000 revs (it is rhythmic, constant and never changes). The needle (and of course the engine) moves between 800-1000 revs like clockwork. 2) Worryingly this is also occurring when I am driving. Whenever I hold a constant speed the engine pulsates like a heartbeat, dropping 200 revs and then correcting. It never stops. 3) It cold starts fine but once the engine is warm then I have serious trouble starting the car. 4) The problem disappears when accelerating only. I have had advice that it is the ignition coils, car at 40k, not sure if they have ever been changed. Please advise, Kev.

Starts fine cold but not hot? Sounds like compression issues possibly, perhaps on one or two cylinders. Check in the oil filler cap for "mayonaise" and go get a compression test. "Roaming" can be caused by all sorts of sensors working incorrectly/not at all. Where are you based?

As it's warm running related, start with disabling the EGR valve. That's a pretty much free fix.

EGR valve and maybe your throttlebody sticks a bit and needs cleaning.

I certainly don't have the same problem but do find that the car is more reluctant to start when warm (it has always started, but it takes noticeably longer for the engine to catch) than when it is cold. Mine idles at around 750rpm which I take to be normal!

Mine is the same at all temperatures except when it has been started from cold and then stopped within a couple of minutes and then tried to start again. Stopud choke flooding the engine :beat:

Does the 2.2 have a cam sensor? Had this sensation on a 2.0 TDI Vauxhall engine before.

warm starting could be the engine temperature sensor, fit a new one they are only £20 or so, or it could be the upper lambda sensor
