You are a jinx Donkey! Finally decided after getting all this stick from you that I'd take super shed out for a run to work this morning.

Going along the airport road and it starts dumping down with snow.

Heater and rear screen demister worked well this morning though. Snug as a bug in a rug.

At least you've actually driven it........small steps and all that !

On MX5NUTZ but they are not half as friendly as here! thumbsdown

Not a lot of technical knowledge about suspension etc. Just lots of people saying "I got this and it feels awesome" and a load of others who have never changed anything in their life regurgitating the same old "don't buy that, it's crap"

I'm in the minority because I want the car planted at the rear and not too low.

There's a thread on them having a stand at Autosport. It's probably one of those guys that you are talking about?
I've put up 2 newbie threads, one when I was looking and one after I got the car and the only kind of response I got was from a Guy called Euan who PM'd me. He was one of the guys that came to see my VX when I was selling it and he recognised the username.

So had a chance to push the car a little more today and have found out it rolls like a boat. The car dives a little to the front left when I brake so I pushed down on all the corners and it seems that not all of the corners are returning like they should. Looks like my shocks are past their best and could do with being replaced. I was planning on replacing them anyway, just not for a while. So lots of research later Im going to go out on a limb and try something. The well rounded established coil over kits are coming in around 550-700 which is half the price of my car. Threes also some cheapy coil over kits that have mixed reviews. One of the better kits that people rate a fraction better are the rokkors http://www.rokkor.co...ilover-kit.html I can get these delivered for about 150 :o The biggest complaint about these is the fact that they are quite hard and so skip a little on b roads. So I started looking a little deeper and found out that all the good kits have spring ratings of about 350lb front and 250lb rear. These cheap kits look to be really heavily sprung at 460/380 which I think is the reason that they are so hard. The spring sizes are the same on every corner and are a really common size, so I looked to see how much the springs were and it looks like I can get them for about 28 a spring. So heres my thinking: Buy the rokkors, swap the softer 380 springs to the front and then buy some softer springs for the rear. Maybe around 275lb for the rear. Total suspension upgrade cost is around 210.

My mother has one of these, its a 1.6 import with the wood. Its cosy but unrewardingly slow and soft. Kinda fun though. My dad span it once, I remember thinking he must have been tryng hard. When ive driven it Ive felt i really needed biggles style flying hat and goggles, moustache and pipe. Suspension is a given i think coming from the vx world as they just feel wet as madza left em. 1500quid doesnt buy any more fun than that though, get in the mx5 cup!

The 1.6 import came in 2 different power outputs and one of them only had 90bhp which is a tad on the pedestrian size. Mine is at least the 1.8 140bhp version but a lot of that power is further up the rev range so you need to give it a little bit of stick to get it to go. I'm not sure how much of the rolling on mine is just because they are like that and how much is because everything is worn? You can get stiffer "Sway bars" or ant-roll bars as we know them, which apparently make quite a big difference so I'll be looking into all of this too. Either way, I'll be having a bit of fun with it. :)

Hi mate, I'm the chap from Nutz that works with Cliffie. For the love of god don't by the Rokkors! or Racelands or any other eBay tat. They really are dreadful.

You might see some favourable reviews of them on Nutz... these are from the stancing kids and people who have no idea what half decent suspension is. After your VX220 they will highlight quite how bad they are.

You really want to be looking at a set of Gaz Gold Pro's or Meister-R's for the MX, although I can only speak from experience on the Gaz's but they really are amazing. PM me on Nutz if you need any advice :)

It's never time to splash out!

hms - I've been doing lots of searching on all the forums and I really can't see what the actual problem is with them. I get lots of people saying the usual of "buy meisterR's etc, they are much better", but no-one who can give a reason why they are supposedly that bad.
The only comments that are not about the them being rubbish (generally from people that have never tried them) is that they are too hard and therefore skip a bit over the bumps. Looking at the spring ratings, this is entirely understandable.
I just can't justify spending half the price of the car again on suspension. There must be a half-way house somewhere that I can get to either by buying 2nd hand or by piecing together from separate components.

That's why I'm spending minimal cash. I'll take folks hand me downs as well. The suspension is the only thing I want to actually spend money on. For example there's an under tray protector thing under neath that's flapping. Am I going to replace it? No .... I'm going to bodge it bob style. A drill, some bolts and a couple of IKEA brackets to patch it together. Brake pads (because they were on offer) and cheap oil isn't exactly pushing the boat out.
