I find the VXT too noisy when using a car stereo and the quality of sound is not great. I decided to remove it (and the speakers - some weight saving of nearly 3 kilos!!!) and add a scangauge II. I bought some carbon fibre sheet and made some covers to hide the holes where the speakers were removed. I think the scangauge looks almost factory and certainly doesn't look out of place. The dot matrix style display matches the dashboard and so does the colour of the illumination.

Oddly enough my radio only started working last week having had the car over two years. I didn't ever figure out how to switch it on and couldn't be bothered really but sat in traffic I started 'hearing voices'. Don't know how to switch it off but can turn it right down ;-)

Hi Magpie and welcome to .org! You seem to be busy with the mods; have you had your VX long? There's a few of us about in Suffolk - hope to see you at a meet once the weather dries up!

That scangauge surround looks so oem, but i cannot find it on their website. Did you make one from scratch?

I made the surround from scratch. It seems so strange to me that no one manufactures these, especially when considering the sales volumes in the States and the fact that a lot of cars have a single din aperture or a double din that can be converted. I searched the web at length with no joy so decided to make my own. The finish on the surround is an exact match for the finish on the Scangauge; it couldn't have turned out better. It took many hours of painstaking cutting, filing and sanding to get it spot on, but it was well worth it!!

I'm looking to do something similar with a Vbox. How have you supported the scanguage so it stays in the surround...? Looks very OEM that surround, nice work!!

:o Wow. How did you get the color rights between the surround and the scangauge, as it is an exact match.

I made some plastic lugs that fit into the recessed notches on the sides of the scangauge that hold it into place on the rear of the surround. The finish of the surround was just pure luck on the blank plastic that I ordered.
