So is this a viable alternative to the stand alone I am about to fit?

If you're running a "modified Z22SE", it very well is.
(Use a 2nd ecu for this, so you can keep your current one as a plug-in-spare... )

I have been reading this with great interest. I would like to give some general information on some key features of the ObdTuner software and why this software is different than a normal mapping. With ObdTuner version 2, speed-density (MAP) control is added for the main fueling. The OEM software is only capable of alfa-n (TPS) control. Why is this important? Well alfa-n control is not capable of recognizing if, when and how much boost is applied. This means with a boosted engine the tuner must assume there is boost in some regions of the fuel map and must compensate for this when he is mapping the engine. If after the mapping session the boost changes for whatever reason, like belt slip or the closing moment of the compressor valve changes, the mapping will not be corrected for this new situation. With speed density control the pressure and the temperature in the intake are measured and used for calculating the amount of air going into the engine so this system can adapt itself accordingly. Another important difference with the original software is the resolution of the fuel tables. The original fuel tables are 8 bits with an offset. With ObdTuner you have full 16 bits fuel tables. (This means the resolution of the fuel tables has improved with a factor of 128.) Therefore it is now possible to map the whole range from idling/cruising up to full power. The original software is never meant to cope with more than 200 hp, so tuners must fiddle with parameters like injector offsets, injector constants etc. to work around this limit. By doing this, the fundament on which the software is relying is wrong and this will result in poor starting, poor warming up behavior and poor throttle response. The 16 bits tables will also lead to less fuel consumption when the car is driven in daily use. The original software can only be calibrated up to 6400 rpm. Above 6400 rpm the software simply uses the values for 6400 rpm. With ObdTuner the tables are extended up to 7800 rpm, this gives much better control in the higher rpm range. Hopes this helps in understanding why ObdTuner version 2 is more capable of correctly managing (boosted) engines then the original software is. P.S. The calibrations you have after tuning are not copy protected and can be freely exchanged with others who are also using ObdTuner version 2. So if you add some new modifications to your engine, you can do a calibration yourself or simply use a calibration from someone else with the same modifications. In any case, there will be no extra software costs.

I assume it doesn't change any OE compensation tables (I hope so), and that knock monitoring is still here. Looks like I may have to revert to an OE ECU on my #1 chassis !

This sounds like an almost OEM solution Next on my list then I can put all the bits I have been collecting to tune my NA together and then upgrade to super charger with little or no hassle The idea of sharing maps is a great idea I think. There has been much work done on this to get it to a point where it can be offered to the masses How much would our old friend JT be asking for a solution like this ? I think not By the sounds of what I have read we would end up with a proper ECU solution Costing at the mo is just a little high but no doubt with the usual .org list it could be worth bringing the cost down There are enough of us I feel who would want this Even Cliffe Lord of the time attack seems to have an interest in this in his Race Car !
