I tried to ask my local dealer this but was merely told "yes they're different" helpful! I used to own an astra vxr, the cam belt change interval was every 8 year's or 80000 miles. It seems the let engine switched over to this in 2005 too, but I don't know if you could fit an leh kit to a let or what the differences are? Anyone know?

80k sounds way too much for a belt

My Focus 1.6 is 100k. Lots of cars used to have interval of around 60k, now 80-100k is more common. Iirc my 197 was 72k. From what I can gather on most cars it tends to be the tensioner that fails rather than the belt itself.

I've never actually known a belt fail, only tensioners or water pumps. Only water pumps I've known fail were not replaced when the cambelt had been done previously, and cause the cambelt to have to be done again prematurely.

Give AutoVaux a ring, they were really helpful when i rang them about which cambelt kit i needed. Next day delivery and dirt cheap too!

Had a nose at part number suing an online EPC. Seems the original cambelt has been replaced with the latter, the "exhaust" roller bearing has been changed and the tensioner is different. Still would like to know what the difference is and if they're interchangable. Agree that 8 years is too long though! :)

I too am in the process of changing my cam belt. Which I am planning to change myself this weekend.

There are 2 kits available:-

  • 93174265 (Z20LET up to and including 2003 cars)
  • 93185844 (Z20LET 2004)

From the VIN number of my car I have been told to use the 93174265 2003 kit. (This is the second CAM belt change on my car, but I am unsure which kit was used during the change)

From research the only difference between the kits is that one of the idler pulleys is made entirely from metal on the later 2004 kit, where the 2003 kit has plastic ones. Although the metal pulley is the same diameter, it does appear to be 2mm thicker (compared by eye in the shop).

My question is can the later 93185844 2004 spec kit be used on a 2003 spec engine? I am just thinking that they must have moved to a metal pulley for a reason, any would this be a prudent modification.

There are 2 types of cam wheel for the Z20LET/H, one is square cut teeth, the other more rounded. You can visually see the difference if you find pics.

Cheers Nev,

I should have a good idea what’s fitted when I take it apart later. The chaps at Autovaux were very helpful and said I can exchange the kit if it’s the wrong type.
