Had my MOT today, Passed on everything, but the (ex army) mot guy yanked the handbrake up and snapped the cable. My handbrake has only ever done up 3 clicks (so about an 1-2 inches) but obviously tried to yank it as far as in a normal car, thus snapping the cable. £135 + vat from vaux, anyone know where is best to get one? Anything special in the fitting Cheers of any help guys

Cheap from lotus for OE or there's a different designed one from elise parts for similar money (about 35 I think if its the secondary cable thats gone) Its quite a thick cable so it was probably corroded slightly and is a case of broke during the MOT rather than MOT man broke it.

It's the secondary one, and it snapped at the end next to the brake driver side caliper. Where it is exposed to the elements. Looking at the other side it isn't in the best state but it would have broken if he wasn't a bit more careful. Luckliy i did everything else during the MOT, god know what else he would of broken.

Looks like the one I have. I found it a bit thicker than OE so you might need some new P-clips.

I guess the argument would be it should be able to handle the equivalent force used in an emergency.
Better Mr MOT breaks your handbrake than you do in an emergency

Better than failing on a steep hill parked up and not in gear, it must have been weak.

Got mine from lotus by far the cheapest I cound find. Simple to replace particularly if yours has snapped. Just take a bit of time over the adjustment rather than do it twice (lesson learnt). Also theres a recommended gap for the handbrake arm check on here..http://www.speedsterclub.nl/bibliotheek/technische%20documentatie/tis/Standard%20Information/Brakes/index.html Dan
