There seems to be a lot of 'why bother' challenge here suddenly. I think the answer is 'because I can'! It's just playing cars for a bit of fun.

Wouldn't bother with wet lay C.F. expensive and won't save you any weight.

Im at about 845kg with a cage and extinguisher. I think the cage is 30-40kg?

My front splitter is heavy as it's 12mm ply and I've not cut anything out the clams and doors as far as I remember. I also have a standard battery.

Probably less now than it did before the crash. Definitely more layers of fibreglass though.

strip out the wiring loom, you will be surprised how much the radio wiring weighs - it goes via the engine compartment to the speakers

I removed a few kilos from my loom, but that included quite a chunk of engine wiring stuff - I have a Webcon ecu

It can do. My hardtop was wet layed and vac bagged. Came in at 4kg so not too shabby for weight saving.....although I must confess I don't know what an oem roof weighs!! It can be dear though, unless you have a source of cheap materials ;)

There was a French guy on here who went to extreme lengths to lighten his VX220 and came to the same conclusion. He gave up eventually and just bought a 450 Kg Radical. No way a VX can compete with that, no matter how much time you spend trying to get it's weight down you won't get near 450Kg (clearly!)

I think you are talking about Rapidos...
He is from Belgium and his Turbo Speedster reach less than 800 kg... But more like a race car, without lights...
But there is also a French turbo owner here: Chris and he is also below 800 kg but has kept all road and esthetic features... (everything looks like an unmodified Speedster) and he kept the 5x110 pattern for wheels.
He is one of the lightest in road configuration.
He has machined some titanium parts to replace heavy steel when it was possible..

Ah  yes, Radpidos - Belgium is the same as France isn't it ?!

Glad to hear you still have your VX220, I think I must have got you confused with someone else who sold theirs.

Yes I forgot the Rapist... That i did not know of... But for the same weight Chris ' car is still using 17' wheels, ABS, airbag, hinged boot cover and hinged front access cover... There is also a French guy living in french overseas island modifying a NA... He is at less than 750 with a chargecooled SC installed... But not with full features (no boot, no hinges on boot cover, no airbag... Etc

I'm not sure why you'd want a lighter battery anyway - you don't want to lighten the front any more IMO, and any weight reductions should be coming from the rear, or at least matched by corresponding weight reduction at the rear. The battery is mounted very low over the front wheels, so kinda optimal location wise.

Off the wall extreme idea - Do a VX 211.. Remove the front screen completely, the rear screen and all surrounding bodywork to leave just the roll-over hoop. Remove the dash top and replace with a section of carbon fibre sheet. Completely remove the boot and vent the rear clam. Your car will probably be unsellable after this, but you'll come a solid second to the Atom!

If you remove the battery and heater could you relocate some of the engine bay stuff to the front for better weight distribution and better airflow at the back. The cc pump, ECU, there must be other things too?

I agree, I also thought about doing this sort of thing years ago. I even wondered if the CC header tank would be relocatable to the front.
