Started to get the gear box out of the car this morning before family time

And found this on the subframe
The way it's cracked looks like the subframe has actually tornrather than just cracked

Decided to not rush now and try have it ready for Anglesey

IMHO That's a fairly normal stress crack in steel that has simply progressed over time. (the tip 'creeps' futher)

Likely it has been there for some time but (much) smaller. But as it progresses the area around it becomes more 'loose' so flexes more under repeated loads and that speeds it up and... you get the idea :)

A bit like bending a tab on a coke can back and forth. It will slowly 'give' and then rapidly come apart.

Definitely needs fixing though.. But luckily the subframes are (as far as I know) pretty boggo steel, so crack can be arrested (drill hole at tip), damaged area ground down and then a good weld bead to tie it all back together. If you want to be fancy you can do a dye penetrant test around the cracked area to see if there are any small 'branches' from the main crack that need attention too.

Bye, Arno.

must admit , I never jack under those rear subframe parts where the undertray bolts to , metal there is very soft , always on the middle of chassis and only for short periods.

if the subframe had been powdercoated , would this have been visible during inspection?

These cracks are appearing from a sharp (ish) edge on the sheet steel making up the frame. Could the fix for this issue be as simple as dressing the corners off the edge where it starts and polishing up to remove the start point? I know this doesn't help Chill.

Not the end of the old but the clutch does have some wear on it so That's being replaced to

This brings up a other question is it worth sticking a 4.17 gearbox in there while it's off

The car will no longer be used on the road so track only and I currently can't remember using fith gear in the last 2/3 years infact the only time I remember using 5th is at zandvoort

Does anyone have the data between standard and 4.17 g box at 7500 rpm limiter please

That's based on a 255/40/17 tyre? Is that correct?

4.41 would be perfect really, doubt you would see anymore than 156mph on any circuits in the UK...might be wrong though your car is seriously fast!

Chris, what's the max speed you get upto along the main & back straight at Snet? Do you reach 150mph now? I have to get into 5th with a 4.17
