Chris, what's the max speed you get upto along the main & back straight at Snet? Do you reach 150mph now? I have to get into 5th with a 4.17

I'm getting close to the limiter even in the wet in 4th down back straight in 4th and looking back at the video I could probably of pulled 5th gear and been on full throttle for a lot lot longer (3.95) box

You video was in the wet, so that’s not a good comparison for your top speed. But I presume you’ll be nearing 148+ in the dry.

As your power comes in so rapidly, you may be swapping gears more than you’re used to. It may not be ideal in the wet or in damp conditions

I've also got to get off the line but going by the data danny put up there's not a lot of difference in speeds

As for top speeds my car hits a invisabke wall at around 140 so maybe the slightly higher revs ( more power ) might help me to push through easier

It must be higher than 140 as I hit that in my car (mind you, that's only a speedo reading). A 4.17 is great, I wouldn't go back to a standard box in a hurry.

Its looking like i might have to change the final drive in my gearbox, been looking today for a z22se 4.17 today with no joy

can get the final drive out of quite a few other gearboxes

While searching around today its also possible to go even shorter using a f23 WR ratio with a 4.17 FD (using some parts from f23 diesel gearboxs )

but think this will be a step to far for me

4.41 Chris.

You won’t regret it!

Vx220 are geared far too tall for track days/racing.

Even with a 4.41 it’s still tall gearing, you’ll never hit the limiter on track, and you’ve only got 5 gears so you won’t be changing gear all the time, just be in a higher gear in different parts of the track.

If my 4.17 goes wrong I’ll be changing for a 4.41

To be fair, my car's 2nd is virtually obsolete & hardly ever used. Even with my meagre torque, compared to yours, it has plenty of pulling power low down in 3rd. So, only 3 gears are used on track.

If you take a look at my video below at Snet, you'll see that 2nd gear is not used at all.

Chris I would almost certainly consider a diff as well :) (if you're not already)

4.17 gives a lot more punch and I know you already have issues with one tire fire on corner exit.

That said you are usually up a gear so it may actually help smooth the delivery.

Yeah me too Max I wouldn't want any shorter personally I very rarely use 2nd. I only rev mine to 6k though so very different to your higher reving built engines

The Harrop has vast amounts of torque and grunt compared to my car and it also comes in very quickly. Your tyres my squeal in pain if you're heavy footed and you may find that it's not a match made in heaven.

Lucky enough I'm quite delicate on the throttle 🤥
I also don't run the silly boost pressures everyone else insists on running

I use a big pulley and have less the 1 bar of boost

The bigger tires I use have not made any difference I still drive to the grip but regularly over do it in corner exit and not having a lsd I normally spin up the inside wheel (

Chris,

my car is going to Joe's soon and Neil is doing some engine work whilst there. As you know, my car has a 4.17 box and an Lsd fitted. If you can sort out with them to remove the box, you're welcome to try it out on your car? It may cost you a couple of hundred pounds to pay them to remove & re-fit it and a day's effort, but at least you'll know if the 4.17 & LSD sorts out your problems?

Thats a kind offer Max

but sounds a lot of messing about switching and switching gearboxes twice in two cars

so im going to say thanks for the offer but i am not prepared to strip mine down twice just to try a gearbox

(time is very short atm

but it was a kind offer thanks
