The whole "rods will fail at 270bhp" seems a bit odd to me.. Ok i know theyve been destructively tested by bith GM and Joe, but the power output is dependant on a number of factors, some of which will be stressing the rods more then others.. Is it due to high rpm, high rpm or a combination of the two? For example, an efficient exhaust system may mean the difference in 250 vs 270bhp at similar boost levels and rpm, so which is more likely to fail..? Ps.- change your rods Chris

How many cars have failed at 270 ish? Obviously Joe's did but has anyone else pushed it to see?

one was enough, seriously expensive lesson,

get the eagle rods, believe you can change them in situ, Vocky will now you can leave the pistons till 310+

Parasitic loss on the SC itself not taken into account, so these 270 cars are actually running 300 isch.

looks like my engine is going to have a few new parts,

The only thing is ive never done anything inside a engine apart from change a head gasket when i was 17,

on saying that i never had any inclination to get involved inside a engine.

i have been on a steep learning curve since i have owned the VX and now im going to get involved in the internals of my engine.

Can you not get eagle rods in this country.

and does anyone have a guide for a idiot on how to change the rods. i might be tempted to get some pistons at the same time.

if anyone has any tips or places to get parts please let me know.

i will be doing the work over the winter so i better turn the engine down a bit.

Ive never stripped or changed internals either but i wouldnt mind giving it a go. Everyone has to start somewhere so if you want we could do it together with a couple of guides. Tempted stick some rods in mine sometime to be on the safe side.

@Nick

I get that but when the 2.2 engines are relatively cheap and your risking a well used engine with its best days behind it and you can fit another engine yourself so no labour costs then i wouldn't say its too expensive. 260 is seen as the safe point as no one has had a failure but whats to say that Joe's wasn't slightly weaker and other engines could be happy at 270? Chris will be pushing 300bhp by the end of the year no doubt so it makes sense for him to get them done.

You have quite a steep drop at max rpm. Sure your fuelpump is coping with all this?

(did you do a wideband logging?)

Im sure i can iron that out with ignition changes but with all the talk of my engine needing new bits above im reluctant to play anymore and if anything i might have to detune a little,

injectors are only at 81% duty cycle

no wide band logging it will be soon though.

I can help with the engine over the winter months. It is all quite simple really (famous last words). You will have to make the decision at this point if you are going for forged pistons or not. Has anyone seen a piston go? I can recommend a company for any machining work and can take the parts for you as they are just around the corner from me at work. Just read the above pistons will be required!

I would leave it at 260, and replace engine with crate engine if it goes pop.

I think I would like the rods for peace of mind but keep the standard pistons. Then get the exhaust manifold port the head and be happy with 270-280 ish bhp. Avoiding lumpy idle, piston slap and a shed load of cash for the sake of 25 bhp.

I wish somebody had convinced me of that before I did it (twice). Stick with OEM parts (though upgraded rods will be fine) for as long as you can. :beat:

injectors are only at 81% duty cycle

you do realise 80% duty cycle is deemed maxed out for injectors

Rods can be easily replaced with the engine in-situ, just whip the head and sump off.

:yeahthat:  Add some uprated valvesprings and maybe cams to that for high rev fun. A light flywheel and consider balancer delete if you can bear with some extra vibrations.
