I believe they retain the crank shaft, so if you are converting to 2.2 L then you will need to remove them.

you need to remove twenty of the bolts with a 15mm head and ten of the 13mm head bolts
Basically all the bolts visible when the engine is upside down
Then use a large screwdriver or small crowbar and lever off the lower crank carrier
