I know the subject has been gone over. And always seems to have a negative reception. But what are the main problems stopping me from fitting 18" wheels.
Im currently on 16/17s and hate the front arch gap. Running on Nitron Ntrs if that makes any difference.

I have 18s on mine. Other than not being able to use full lock and also needing spacers, I've never had problems 
Ride is probably harder though, although I've never been in any other VX.

The Europa had 18s on it, so each to their own. Lowering the front would probably be cheaper and I suspect slightly less hassle. I'm no expert tho

Why not just fit 17s on the front then ? Plenty of people have done that.

Splitter allready scrapes now. Wouldn't get anywhere if it were lower.

The black speedster at the water is mine.
Wheels are Motec Nitro
Front: 8x18 20mm offset, Tyre 225/35 18
Rear: 9,5x18 25mmoffset, Tyre 245/35 18
Car is lowered with Nitron NTR suspension and lowering brackets at the front.
As you can see in the picture the car is very low, so the tyres are little touching the front of the sill when on full lock. And a little at the wheel arch when on full lock and driving through a pothole with 2 persons in the car.
At the rear i needed to mod the inner side of the wheel arch. I removed the upper srew from the plastic widening and bonded it to the clam.
For this season i will reduce tyres to 215/35 18 at the front and 235/35 18 at the rear. I think this smaller tyres will not touch the clams again.
In my opinion the car handles good with that wheels.
The rims are lighter than the N/A standard alloys. Even tyre+rim is lighter than tyre+rim OEM rear.
But i need to say that i am not a racing driver, i am not running on circuits. I am using the car on normals roads, just for fun.

At the rear it looks like it MUST scratch. But it does not cause the camber gets more negative when the suspension is working.

Functionally speaking (and I know many of you are only interested in looks) some of the +ive and -ive reasons for upsizing wheels are:
Larger footprint of rubber on the floor (both width and length).
Heavier unsprung mass overall overall.
Greater rotational (ie gyroscopic) effect of the wheels. This can be considerable.
Worse 'tracking' and snatching of the steering wheel. This can also be considerable and quite voilent.
Often means you have to adopt a lower profile tyre which is worse for road/bad tarmac.
Wider tyres can mean you feel more secure, but there is a great propensity/chance that on occasion the tyre will partially come off the tarmac (due to camber or peaks in tarmac), meaning you suddenly lose that tractional advantage - which can cause wheelspin/instability.
I've upsized to 18", and it's not all positive. The car is deffo less nimble with 18", but ultimately has greater grip, particularily on good surfaces.

I've gone for the compromise of 17" at the front and 18" at the rear. Hopefully the best of both worlds, but we'll see.
Just to resurrect this thread - how have the 17" / 18" combo worked out? WHich wheels did you go for and what width wheel and tyres? Any rubbing issues? How does it handle?
I'm thinking of doing the same.
