Mikes has a cross between the two legs, which is going to stop the two legs from pushing together. So the force required to push the two legs together is going to be more than that to crush that panel which means that the crush design is redundant is it not? Anyway, im not bothered i was just wondering, im just going to sit back and eat my popcorn.. See you at croft.

So much butthurt in here. It's making an existing hole a bit bigger. I can guarantee it's not going to the difference between life and death in a crash as scuffers is making it out to be :glare: Sure, it's altering the integrity of that panel, but how large a part does that very thin sheet of alu play in structural integrity anyway? Taking a few hundred mm off that won't do much.

Despite the gneral contempt throughout this thread is an interesting debate. It would be interesting to find out peoples opinion on making the hole a touch bigger (not as big as the pictured one!!) and then epoxy bonding in a flange to the bottom or swaging the hole to add some rigidity. It could end up stronger than the OE holed panel.

If I was in a crash, where the rigidity of the hole was the single most important thing, I think I'd be dead or close to it.

you may be surprised then...

I have seen a few chassis that have had medium impacts on the side, where this panel has collapsed due to being cut out, fortunately all were with only the driver in them, had somebody been in the passenger seat, one particular one they would not have come off well, the side rail had rolled into the car by about 5" at the top, I don;t want to speculate on how that would effect a person sitting there, but let's just say I am pleased it was not me.

Look, you need to understand how the tub is designed and built, yes, that panel looks trivial, but it isn't, much the same with the shear plate (hence the warning label on it!).

ignoring all of that, I would not buy a car that had been butchered like this, and I suspect neither will most people, so you are in effect, de-valuing your own cars...

Neil, no one does  It's all bullshit. It's not worth responding to. You'll just get a reply with more capitalisation and spelling mistakes. with the same knuckle dragging mantra of 'what's your lap time' and 'I've seen crashes where you would have DIED'. Rolleyes We've actually done quite a lot of interesting analysis around stresses and strains around a hole or an ellipse in sheet, I-section, t-section and box section over a variety of materials including aluminum. The radius of the hole of course has a significant effect on the ultimate tensile strength of the material, but it's a small factor compared to the thickness of the material. Growing the existing hole by 20% would have insignificant effect in this application. Given that the hole on the other side is smaller and in a different position, one suspects that lotus were completely unbothered about the hole in the fist place. I wouldn't cut out any angles and I would avoid cutting squares as that creates stress points (which become foldpoints) but even then you'd have to be a little funny in the head to go around telling people they'd ruined their chassis  I won't get drawn in any further and wont reply again.

Looks like the OEM hole is an afterthought anyway (ignore the yellow circle)

When will you people realise that Scuffers is always right. Disregard that he can't provide evidence or information to back up his statements, you are all wrong and let that be the last we hear of it. You should all just be happy he is lowering himself to talk to you plebs ;)

Scuffers answer me one simple question. Is denting the wishbone (how Cliffies was done with a giant mallet, or how Jamie's was done with extreme heat and then a chunk of metal in a clamp and doing it up very very tight) a BODGE?

When Mr Scuffers ruffeled some feathers in Mike's TA topic, he stated he was only interested in Mike and the car, so would be contained in that topic.
I gave him the benefits of the doubt.

I think he enjoys yanking a few chains just as much as the other now as he has spread down to parts wanted topics.
He has a reputation to uphold.

Was that the slightly flatulent noise I heard a minute ago? To be honest, I'd put it down to the chillis I'd just had on my American Hot but it could well have been the interwebs imploding.
