Car is 10 years old this month / 40,000 miles :jump: so after a few years of "specialist" servicing I thought I would treat(?) her to a full Vauxhall service and cam belt change - don't you just love the griffin stamps? (no answer required) Rang up stealer [those in the Gloucestershire area will know who] and asked for a quote. After preliminary chat, conversation went along the lines of: Dealer: Is that a 10 year or 40,000 mile service you want sir? Me: 40,000 - isn't that an important one? Dealer: no, just an oil change Me: Oh, what about the 10 year one then? Dealer: that's just an oil change too. Me: Well, how much for that then plus the cam belt change. Dealer: that will be [a large number of pounds]. Me (having steeled myself for comedy number): will you be able to fit me in next week Dealer (after consulting VX220 specialists diary): Ok Two minutes later, trying to decide whether this was such a good idea the phone rings! Dealer: We'll need to keep the car for 2 days "to make sure we do it right" :poke: Me: ......? 2 days for an oil and cambelt change? WTF? are they transporting it to Germany and back??? :glare: Should I cancel? Vote:

Personally I'd prefer to take it to someone who knows the car. The fact the car hasn't had a can belt change I ten years / 40k and the dealer suggests just an oil change would put me right off. My can belt was changed 12k miles ago. As it was 4 years its now been done again.

At that low milage you should ignore the miles. Belt should of been done at the 4 and 8 year point. Only look at mileage if you more than 12k miles a year as it'll pull the servicing point forward. Belt shouldn't take more than half a day though. Aslong as they don't charge you 16 hours labour

Cam belt is either every 4 years or 40k whichever is sooner.

Baylis did my cambelt and water pump recently (second belt change, even though it's only done 21,000 as it is 9 years old). They only needed it for one day, but one of side engine mounts had gone so they kept it in overnight to get the part delivered. It was Paul who dealt with it. Price was reasonable, a few quid cheaper than Neil Garner quoted (which was a surprise). Can dig out the invoice if anybody wants to know the exact price.

To be honest, a Vauxhall dealer are going to know how to change a cambelt. They must do 1000's of them a year. It is a bog standard Vauxhall engine after all. It's not like your asking them to do a geo or something specialist and VX specific like that.

I could change it quicker than 2 days using only a hammer, long nosed pliers, a small flathead screw driver and another hammer, just incase. Run.

It took me two days, about 2 hours to do the cambelt and the rest of the time waiting for parts that vauxhall never fitted correctly on the previous cambelt change. Aux belt had worn thought the cam covers as the studs/bolts had been bodged. If I take it to a garage I much prefer independents which knowledge of the cars.

Get your water pump done at the same time as well. Surprised they didn't recommend it.
