On a limited but realistic budget I eagerly sent my beloved Vx down to PSR for a three jobs that needed doing before the summer. 1. To fit and set up a new steering rack. 2. To diagnose an engine noise that I have had intermittently for a a year or so. 3. To check out the ABS warning light issue. The steering rack was no problem, but they couldn't seem to hear the engine noise I'd been describing in the first two days that they had the car. We both thought that it was the timing chain, but it was only a certain revs and not at all when out of gear. In the meantime they informed me that all of the collars on the shocks were badly corroded and one was cracked through to the centre. To cut along story short I decided to get the collars replaced, partly based on the fact that it sounded like it might not be the timing chain after all. Their mechanic took the car home over the weekend to give it a longer run and they've just informed me that they now do think that it is the timing chain and that I should be very careful when driving it. Oh....plus the ABS is a OSR wheel hub change. As most of my budget for the work has now gone on the collar work I am forced to face the problem that I'll not be driving my VX any time soon or at all this year it looks like. I am no great mechanic, but I so desperately want to get my car back on the road, that I have no other choice than to attempt these two jobs myself if I can scrape enough cash to get the parts. I will check out the connection on the OSR hub first though just to make sure that it not simply a break in the wire etc. I feel pretty sh1t about the whole situation right now. Am I being realistic about doing thes jobs myself?

Sorry to hear of your pain mate. Most car jobs for a DIYer are about doing enough research to give you the confidence and having the tools to hand. I'm sure there are plenty of people in the area that will give you a hand. Chin up :)

I'd have only paid for the chain to be replaced. The rest of them are straightforward DIY jobs, though slightly awkward in the case of the steering rack.

Not at all hard, if it's a front hub that needs replacing. Only three or maybe four bolts to undo, once the wheel and brake disk are off.

There you go Stevo  I reckon collectively we could help out mate. Clearly the chain requires adult intervention but we could have a crack at the hub

Yep, definitely not one to tackle unless you know what you're doing. I've seen it done twice on my engines and theres still no way I'd try it.

Happy to lend a hand with a jack and torque wrench. I'm sure we can change it between our two brain cells.

Fook me look at the amount of people viewing this thread. I'm guessing the title lead them to believe you ditched the car.

Steering rack and shock collars have been done by PSR mate.

I am going to have to attempt a timing, balance chain and OSR hub only.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear. :)

That was exactly what I had planned. I had enough in the budget to do the rack and the chain, but the shock collars blew that apart, £400+!! Now I don't have anywhere near the amount for PSR to do the chain. Might just about be able to get the parts at a push.

The only run it's had this year is to PSR last Wednesday!! Just spent £154 taxing the bloody thing too. I might as well chop that in.
