don't forget to replace both chain kits, the balancer chain tensioners are nearly always seized these days

Might also be worth replacing the alternator belt tensioner, alt belt and the rubber engine mount

Yes for the cost of them bits its a no brainer to put on new while they are off. The alternator belt tensioner will fall in half when you take it off anyway  unless its had a new one on.

I think I have a chain kit knocking about you can have and a gasket for the chain cover. Its only the timing chain and not the balancer chain though so you will still have to get one. Its also a pattern part and GM but would be ok for a year if you want to replace at some point. I cant see it being too bad since a Vauxhall specialist shop in Dageningham use them on there servicing.. I don't mind coming and helping, some of the Essex guys and myself did the chain on my old, old engine on my old VX.. fiddly and annoying but not that hard :) Also have a spare good condition aux belt tensioner you can have, and I did have a brand new belt.. but I just gave that to Joey

I have a used but good water pump I'll happily donate to the cause if its needed. ETA: maybe a belt tensioner too but I'll have to consult the loft box.

Oh my that's alot for the collars to be changed! Makes replacing with something else look the better buy. Glad I never bothered with mine now. See my text for hub advice. You might be lucky and not need to replace it. If you do I'll pop over for an afternoon and lend a hand, having just done mine they aren't too difficult but the cost of tools start to add up!

Update: If it's not a simple wire issue, I am gonna blow the remains of the budget on the hub so I can MoT it at the weekend. They have given me a decent price which I have run past a .org member that had recently done his and he agreed. Leaving me with a chain replacement. This will give me two options: 1. To try and borrow the extra cash and get a certain .org member to fit it. 2. To get the boys round and go for it. I don't think that the chain is about to fail (famous last words) and TBH I think that it is most likely a tensioner that has part seized? Would this account for the fact that the tapping is only between 1500-2200 revs under load. Out side of this range its very quiet. Running the engine up to high revs out of gear also produces no obvious tapping noise.

Steve the price for the hub swap is fine. You could do it for a lot less yourself with an ebay hub and some .org love. If your wanting it mot at the weekend then go for it. If you don't mind waiting either myself or another member can sort you out. A few beers will be less than the cost of having a garage doing it.

I drove around for about 18 month with a chain noise until I realized what it was and got round to changing it, it may or may not snap soon.

Has the car been mapped? Mine had a rattle sound at them revs under load after the CS map. Since installing the OBD Tuner the sound has gone. I also get transmission rattle at in that range and always have. I have both original tensioners in working order you can have. I don't think it is a cam chain issue as these are normally very loud at idle. If you remove the rocker cover (a 10 min job) the cam chain can be inspected to see if it has become loose.

The car hasn't been mapped no. It's definitely a tapping more than a rattle coming from the chain end.

The car passed the MoT today so it's just the chains that need addressing now. I really need to nail down the specific problem though. I'll take a look at the chain as you suggest though.

thumbsup Thanks for the advice.

How far should I be able to compress the chain at the top with the rocker cover off? I presume some amount of movement is to be expected?

Look on you tube search z22se chain. There is a vid on there by Miniator. It should not be like that, there will be a little deflections but should feel in high tension between the top 2 gears.

Took the time to read through and printed off a couple of guides from z22se.co.uk on changing chains etc last night.

This one in particular was really good http://www.z22se.co....m-chains.10042/

Lots of really good pics

Have any of you guys used a specific one that you would recommend?
