Hi Guys, Seeking some advise here... I've read all related threads but could do with further assurance / guidance. My NA (generally) sits at 72-85 (engine temp) day & night, irrespective of engine load. She is on the original rad (still looks good with no leaks) & pipe work is sound. She's on her second expansion tank (now a little "crazed" as I never got round to fitting a cover, as car is garaged & sees little direct sunlight). However... the circuit appears airtight. Today I got stuck in a traffic jam for 2 hours (mild air temp) during which time my engine temp climbed to 106! I heard the fan kick in & pulled onto hard shoulder to let her cool down. When engine temp regained 80, I took off again. But - even enjoying good air flow - she very quickly climbed to 90, then 100 again. I pulled over & waited 30 mins for cool off. Before taking off again, I checked the expansion tank. Fluid level looked very low (less than 50%) so I slowly released cap & expansion tank filled again (from system - with no fluid added) to usual level.... But.... Again she climbed to 100 very quickly... What's the general consensus? 1. Just got hot due to standing in traffic, engine & cooling system retained residual heat so (unusually) rose to 100 quickly. 2. Crazing in expansion tank is letting air into the system... Any cracks (visible or not) are expanding & leaking due to unusually hot running? 3. It's something else.... Start looking at thermostat, sensors or pump? Cheers Co-Co. Just a little unnerving. That "hot engine smell" spells "danger Will Robinson" to me! Anyone had any joy with a manual fan switch in the cabin? When I modded 4x4's, we'd whack in 2nd fans or fan upgrades... Anyone done this / worth doing? Ta. Ben.

Tried that Kenni. I got the upgraded silicone heater mod in mine, so (theoretically) heater woks... But made FA difference!

100% normal. Mine would bang off the fans daily for a few years on the m25

You can turn the fan off/on with a scangauge

Shame you can't do same with Dash Command (unless anyone know different).

Or a pikey style switch, if you're that paranoid. Costs next to nothing.

Your cars fine mate, I had a similar issue last year on the m62 fan kicked in at 106 engine smelled hot etc,

think that was a 2hr jam from memory, mine was the same never went above 89c.

Yep, as per link above, a simple 3quid switch, 2 bits of wire and a scotch lock connector, job done.

Probably worse to pull over and switch off at 106 as the temp will rise a bit immediately after switching the engine off!

Kind of figured that. Pulled over (engine running) popped bonnet and engine bay, cooled a little, shut off at 92 & allowed to cool further.

I parked my car up one day showing 98 degs, being slightly worried I waited 5 mins and started the car again and it was then 106 degs ! I will be doing the fan switch before the Blackpool illuminations as my 6yr old son wants to go through with the roof off.
