Hi .org, after nearly 3 years of ownership, I thought it was about time I started a project thread to document my beloved Tubby.

Background:

In 2010 I reached a bit of a crossroads after having owned nothing but hot hatches and laterly, barges.  After owning several Hondas, my Accord 2.4 Exec decided it would present me with gearbox gremlins, and so I had an urge for something different.  A number of cars were on my list including BMW Z4M, Nissan 350Z, BMW 335 Coupe, and of course VX220's were on the list after a colleague had 3 of them, and I had the pleasure of being a grinning passenger.

Driving around, visiting garages with a fairly open mind, I spotted a Black VX220 Turbo on a forecourt and popped in for a quick look... 4 hours later, and after the most thrilling drive home of my life, it was on my driveway :D 10 minutes after I got home, I joined the forum I had been lurking in :)

I used her as a daily for around 10 months before promoting her to a weekend car.

During my ownership it is fair to say that I have spent 10 times longer, working on, and cleaning the VX than actually driving her, which for me, has been extremely enjoyable, and has given me more confidence to tinker around mechanically.

I will begin by documenting its original spec, what I have done over the last 2 years 11 months, and will then keep this thread up to date with future developments :)

It is worth stating my overall project brief (for now :) ) - "A very tidy Stage 2 that handles and stops well".

Original spec (at the time of purchase): -Completely standard 2004 Sapphire Black Turbo with just over 20k on the clock and FVSH. -Grey Cloth -Central Locking

Thanks for reading :)

A month after purchase, it was in with Mike at SCS in Halesowen for:

[*]Full Service including Cam Belt and brake bleed.
    [*]Stainless steel brake pipes
    [*]Geo
    [*]Anti rattle door pins
Since that point, it hasn't seen a garage/workshop for anything other than an MOT.

I have done a number of routine things that I've not listed below, such as oil services, changed the plugs a few times (NGK Iridium 6), changed the tyres, changed the brake fluid a number of times, changed a number of fixings, tidied a number of things up, and got rid of a few rattles.

Here are the main things I've done so far:

[*]New header tank and level sensor
      [*]Header tank cover
      [*]New Stereo and Speakers
      [*]Black bolts on fuel surround
      [*]Flat wiper blade
      [*]HID dipped beam
      [*]99 VW wiper relay
[*]New heater duct (the sh!t ebay one)
[*]Vinyl wrap windscreen surround & sunstrip in Matt Black (thanks Brett)
      [*]ABS cut-off switch
[*]Powerflex engine mount inserts to front and rear
[*]Forge recirculation valve to replace original rubber one
      [*]New solenoids (boost and intake)
      [*]Fan override switch
      [*]Proalloy intake pipe
[*]RC5+ Pads and Pagid disks machined with J-hook (previously I'd installed 1144's)
[*]Apexi dry foam cone filter (after having previously drilled my standard box to buggery, and briefly used a Courtenay foam panel filter)
[*]Fire extinguisher on a custom bracket that I made
      [*]Nitron Street series (thanks Jimmy)
      [*]Scan gauge
      [*]Removed front V
      [*]Removed rear Griffin
[*]Brand new damped crank pulley (after having previously installed lightened ones)
[*]New aux tensioner, idler pulley and belt (after having previously made the old ones redundant)
[*]Courtenay cam to sump breather (after the previous one failed)
[*]Courtenay plenum/tophat and silicone IC to tophat pipe
Looks great in black would be my choice if I'd not gone with white. Black cars shine so well!

Better spend the intervening time productively, by shopping for some new rubber underpants then :)

Hehe.
