The garage have had to admit defeat, they can't get it going. They spoke to the breakers who said they wanted to speak to me, because they obviously think I'll be an easy touch. They've said we've damaged the engine during the install and it was running when they sold it. I don't think there's anything we could have done to make the engine lose all compression. The breakers have admitted the engine was sat for 5/6 weeks after they steam cleaned it. Which I think is long enough for valves to rust and the flywheel to seize. I reached an impasse with the chap on the phone who said he'll get boss to ring me tomorrow. I have proof the engine I thought i bought is still for sale on eBay, I have the email trail on eBay discussing the purchase. I'm fully prepared to go down the small claims route if I don't get a refund agreed tomorrow. What a shitter :(

Did they say how they thought you'd damaged an engine by just installing it?

Mark, they were on about the flywheel jamming by us trying to start it.  I had asked them about potentially trying to tow start it, simply as a suggestion, and this was during a conversation when I rang to inform them the engine wouldn't start straight after fitting.  They've been trying to play me and the garage off against each other, telling them I said i'd tried to tow start it and at the same time telling me the garage had said i'd tried to tow start it.  Still doesn't explain the fact the engine had no compression.  We didn't open the casing, didn't touch the timing, didn't touch the flywheel or clutch plates during fitting.

Nelly, they can try to sell me anything they want but they already have all of my money!

I have typed up a letter clarifying my position, this will go to them tomorrow if the boss doesn't agree to refund me.

I will try to reclaim the money using chargeback for Visa debit. If that fails, i'll go to small claims.

They've picked the wrong girl to try and turn this round on.  A garage has verified the install was fine, and said the engine is at fault.

Ali you really need to put in writing that you are rejecting the goods you have purchased and the reasons for it along with expert input on the failure to add to your reason for rejection and ask for them to remedy it. They are obliged to either repair or replace or refund under the sale of goods act.

It's currently a garden feature. I keep hoping someone will steal it, save me putting it on ebay lol

Stuff the ports and cling film it to keep the damp out.  Just in case.

I've covered the head and the ports with plastic, but it 100% isn't going back in my car.  I've wanted shut of that engine for over 2 years lol.

My worry is, rightly or wrongly, that i'll end up with the same problem I had before.  I'll have an engine that's been rebuilt twice, that doesn't run the same, and i'll not want to drive it how the car is supposed to be driven.  I don't enjoy driving the car that like, I won't track it, I won't take it out on runs, and I haven't done for quite a while simply because I'm always worried about the engine failing and me not having the funds again to fix it.  If i'm going to feel like I have to pootle around then I may as well go buy a corsa.

I honestly have every faith in the skill and experience of those who've offered help, and it's very much appreciated, but i have absolutely no confidence in the old engine.  I have it in my head that if I replace the engine with a new one that has less miles and runs well then it'll change how I feel about driving the car?  That probably sounds stupid, doesn't it!

I spoke to the breaker again, they wanted to speak to the person who fitted the engine this time. A bit fed up of the messing round at this point, so I emailed them to say I was rejecting the engine under the terms of the sale of goods act, detailed the whole palava and said if they don't come up with an acceptable solution then I'll look to recover costs through the courts. 5 mins later I got a call to say they'll collect the engine from the garage so they can look it over. So I guess it could still go either way, but they'll then have my engine and my money lol. More waiting round to follow!
